Dear Parents,

This week we had the pleasure of enjoying two class assemblies. On Monday, 3A’s class assembly showed us all the things they have been learning about body systems, how they are interconnected and how we need to look after ourselves to make sure we have happy, healthy lives. They did a great job and certainly taught me a few things! Today 1L’s assembly showed us how confident the students have become, with their very first performance in front of the whole school and their parents. The theme of their assembly was feelings and how they can be represented through different colours. They used songs, dance, video and art to express themselves. Well done 1L on a great first assembly. Thank you to all the adults who worked with both classes to ensure the children have a wonderful experience.

Our very special 50th Anniversary Art Gallery and Silent Art Auction last Friday was a tremendous success. I have received many comments from parents about how impressed they were with the quality of the art.  We had many, many bids on all the pieces of art and I am pleased to announce the winners who had the highest bids:

A huge thank you to all of you who made bids and congratulations to those who are taking the art home. Thank you also to Tanay (3F) and Vidhi’s (6H) parents who made a special donation to the cause. In total we raised HK$44, 634! Our Student Council is already discussing how they would like to spend this money to enhance BHS. We will update you when they make their final decision. There will be photos of the winners and the artwork in this year’s special 50th Anniversary Year Book, available towards the end of term 3.

ESF Stakeholder Survey

Parents should have received an email by now inviting you to participate in the biennial ESF Stakeholder Survey, which is open until the 19th March. Through this survey we and ESF aim to find out about the impressions that parents, staff and students have formed about the education we provide. The feedback from the survey will help us build on our strengths and inform our future planning. Students in Years 5 and 6 will also receive an email inviting them to participate in the survey. (The students will complete the survey in school). If you do not receive the email, please check in your ‘Junk Email’ box. If you have any problems or questions please email me directly – james.harrison@bhs.edu.hk

We would be very grateful if you would spare the time to complete the survey. It’s shorter than in the past and takes about 15-20 minutes to complete (though may take a little longer if you wish to add comments in the optional comment boxes). All responses are anonymous unless a stakeholder explicitly chooses to identify themselves. The results will truly help us with future plans to ensure we are constantly striving to provide the best for our students and their families.

The final event of ESF’s 50th Anniversary Celebrations is taking place on Saturday 17th March with the Anniversary Carnival. Tickets are available online and also on the day. It is being held at KGV from 3pm. Our BHS Ukulele group and our Hip Hop dance group will be performing at the event. We look forward to seeing many of you at the event.

The following Friday 23rd March is our BHS International Food Fair. I know the raffle tickets have been selling really well. I hope you, your family and friends will be able to support the evening which begins at 5pm.

Student Achievement Beyond School

I have been told about two of our students who participated in the recent 70th Hong Kong Schools Music Competition. Joshua (5C) was the winner of the junior solo guitar competition. This was an extra-special achievement as many of his competitors were of high school age and he was one of the youngest there.

Abbie (4W) entered the solo vocal category and achieved a wonderful 2nd place! Congratulations to both of these students and to any other BHS students who may have taken part.

Year 5 Big Business

Year 5 Market Day & Sharing Day

The Year 5 children have been busy creating some fantastic handmade products to sell for their Market Day which will be held next Friday, 16th March in the hall from 11:00am – 2pm. All year groups will be visiting the market place during the day and we would suggest that the children bring around $80 to spend. Please note that due to the space available we can only allow the children and teachers to attend.

All profits from the market day will be donated to the Immanuel Kindergarten in South Sudan. This is a charity that Mrs. Quinn, one of our ex-staff members, has been involved in for a number of years.  It is a charity that we have supported in the past and would like to support again, especially in light of the extremely difficult situation that many find themselves in South Sudan.

Touch Rugby Tournament

Well done to the Beacon Hill touch rugby team who played in the Kellett U10/11 Boys Touch Rugby Tournament at Kings Park on Wednesday. The first game saw the boys lose narrowly 1-0 against Kowloon Bay C’s despite a fantastic performance. Next up was Harrow and the boys found their stride, winning comfortably 5-0. The next two games against CIS and Pok Fu Lam A’s were very tough and we lost 4-0 and 6-1 respectively, however the sportsmanship and attitude from the boys was fantastic. The next two games against Pok Fu Lam B’s and Kowloon Bay A’s were much closer but unfortunately still losses. The scores were 2-1 to Pok Fu Lam and 2-0 to Kowloon Bay. We finished the group stage with another 5-0 win against Kowloon Bay B’s which put us into the 5th place playoffs.

The playoff was very exciting. After 12 minutes of play, the boys drew with Kowloon Bay C’s 1-1. This meant that we started extra time, with a player being removed from each team every minute until we were down to 3 a side. Sho, Joshua and Jayden battled it out for 6 gruelling minutes before the opposition unfortunately took the win.

Overall they came 6th out of 8 but the boys played 8 games at 12 minutes a game, plus extra time so it was an impressive physical feat. Well done to all involved.

Thanks to Dylan’s mum for these photos. Click HERE for the photos.

International Food Fair

23 Mar 2018 (Friday 5-8pm)

Please return the donations and volunteering form for the Food Fair.  To run a successful Food Fair we really need your help, be it food, prizes, cash or time.

Remember this year we’re going green and trying to cut down on the waste produced, especially plastic plates, bowls, spoons and forks.  Please bring your own containers and eating utensils on the day.  For those unable to do so we will have disposable containers available for purchase.

Only around half the raffle tickets have been returned. Currently proceeds stand at $90,000,  less than 50% of our $200,000 target.  We really appreciate if you can return these as soon as possible.  Huge thank you to all those who have already returned. More tickets are available upon request.  Remember the top selling class in Y1-3 and Y4-6 will be awarded with a class event/outing.  Please ensure all tickets & monies are safe guarded and correct balances returned to BHS PTA as all numbered tickets & monies are Audited under requirements of the HK Lottery License.

Y6 Pizza Lunch

This will take place on Tuesday 17 April.  Deadline for order is Wed 14 March.

Reminder that we are closed as we’re busy preparing for the Food Fair.  However orders can still be placed and left with reception.  These will be processed as soon as possible and sent direct to classroom.
