Dear Parents,

As you now know, Ms Susan Chung has been appointed as Acting Principal to take over from me for the next academic year. This is excellent news for BHS and Susan and I are already busy working together to ensure a smooth ‘handover’. We will be appointing an internal (BHS) acting Vice Principal who will take over Susan’s current responsibilities. I know you will welcome the appointment of Susan and will continue to give the wonderful support you have in the past.

This morning 5D shared their class assembly. They entertained and informed us focusing on the use and conservation of water. They shared the water cycle in an easy-to-understand way, presented a quiz where we heard about some tips to save water and demonstrated their synchronised swimming skills at the end! Well done to all of 5D including Mr Douglas, Ms Priya, Ms Kannis and Mr Gibson and as always, thank you to the parents for coming to watch.

Today we had several students attending a ‘Making Makers Day’ at RCHK. This is an interesting and rapidly developing area of education and Mr Lowe will be able to provide more information about the day in a later Newsletter.

Last Friday evening we had a group of girls performing in the ESF Celebration of Dance at West Island School. Ms Jeves, Mr Teahan and Ms Kannis have been working with the girls over several weeks, during lunchtimes and their hard work paid off with a magnificent performance. They showed skill, determination and passion with their dance and represented BHS superbly. Congratulations girls and thanks to the teachers for giving their time and to parents for their support. We are now approaching the time of year when the temperature is increasing and also when we may have heavy rain. Please ensure your child has a named BHS hat with them each day so that they can play outside. Also you may wish to refer to our ‘Bad Weather’ procedures on our website – https://www.beaconhill.edu.hk/bad-weather-procedures/

IMPORTANT DATES

STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT BEYOND SCHOOL

On Sunday 29th April Gabriel, Marcus and Julien (3S), and Felix (3A) represented BHS in the “ActiveKids – The Chess Academy Hong Kong Inter-School Team Chess Championships 2018” at Saint Benedict‘s School and I am delighted to announce that they won the 1st runner-up position in the Lower Primary division.

There were a total of 19 teams from different primary schools. Each team played 7 rounds in the game.  The teams were much stronger than their last inter-school tournament at South Island School in March. With the unyielding spirit of the team members, BHS team climbed to 5th place after round 4 but then dropped to 9th place after losing to the champion team (Wah Yan) in round 5. The team was so determined to strive for an unbelievable rebound in the last two rounds and finally they successfully climbed to 2nd place.  Well done BHS chess team.

The final rankings of the competition:

Champion –  Pun U Association Wan Yan Primary School

1st Runner up – Beacon Hill School

2nd Runner up – Hong Kong International School

3rd Runner Up – German Swiss International School

On the 22nd April there was a ‘Rapid Chess’ tournament held at HKIS. Once again our chess players took part and performed strongly. Marcus (3S) achieved 1st runner-up place and Gabriel (3S) claimed 3rd runner-up place.

Very well done to the team and thank you to the parents who organised the BHS entry.

Enjoy the weekend.

Cricket Tournament

On Wednesday 2nd May Beacon Hill played in the inaugural HK girls cricket tournament. For the whole team this was their first time playing in a competitive cricket tournament. The team played two games and narrowly lost both which meant we ended up finishing third out of five teams. The girls bowled amazingly well during the tournament and the organiser praised them for their correct technique and accuracy when bowling. Sophia was our player of the tournament for her two fours in a row and for bowling out an opponent. Photos from Mr Teahan and the organiser can be found HERE.
