Student Council Fruity Friday

The last term we surveyed our students to find out how we can make BHS even better.  A lot of students wanted Fruity Friday back.  This is an opportunity for you to help your child have delicious and healthy snacks at least once a week.  Can you please support and encourage your child to bring in a fruity snack each Friday.  We do not want processed snacks with fruit in them as they contain preservatives and man-made sugar.  Thank you in advance for your support.  Fruity Friday starts on Friday 19th January.

Sincerely
Connor, Vien, Alena and Alice

 Portfolios

Please can you make sure you return your child’s portfolio to school. We hope you enjoyed sharing their learning with them from the first term.

  Cold Weather Clothing

Please remember to make sure that your child’s clothes are all labelled clearly with their full name and class. Especially with the cold weather we have had this week, children have several layers of school uniform.

Mother Tongue Story Telling
Last year a group of parents told stories to our students in their mother tongue during lunchtimes.  As you can imagine this was very popular with our students and a great way to share the range of languages we speak within our community.  If you are interested please click here to add your details.  Any time you can give and to any year group is really appreciated.  For those interested we can meet to discuss logistics in more details.  If you have any questions please email me at andy.thompson@bhs.edu.hk.

In English and Information Literacy the students have worked with Ms Jeves to create an explanation of their chosen body system using the app Explain Everything. They created their own scripts and added photos and pictures to their animation. In English the children have continued to work on features of an explanation, in particular the language used within an explanation text.

During Unit of Inquiry the children have been becoming experts on their chosen body system and have begun work on their independent final presentation. They have all been working really hard to show their learning in a variety of creative ways.

In Maths the children started their new unit on measurement, they have been busy estimating, comparing and measuring objects using standard units of measurement. They began to look at how to measure objects with accuracy.

The interaction between body systems helps us to keep healthy and survive.

  1. How the body systems work (function)
  2. Interdependence and independence between the body systems (connection)
  3. Impact of lifestyle choices on the body systems (responsibility)

Next week the children will be completing their final presentation of their chosen body system and presenting this to their class. They are also looking forward to their trip to Coastal Fitness and Victoria Park which will be a great way to end the unit.

Estimation allows us to measure with different levels of accuracy

The children will be inquiring into:

  1. Identifying  the standard units used to measure length / mass / capacity
  2. How we measure objects with accuracy
  3. How we solve problems involving measurement

Next week the children will start to look at some problem solving connected to perimeter and area. They will also continue their work in class on some mental maths strategies.

Mathletics passwords are in your child’s diary. Please make sure that an adult supports your child when working through the activities.

Next week we will continue to write and edit an explanation focussing on the use of the present tense, connectives and the passive voice.

The children have been learning to recognise that with reading comes thinking. For every part that they decode, they must also be mindful of what they are thinking. They have been using this to help them during their research for their final presentations for Unit of Inquiry.

Year 3 will read books from Big Universe on a Monday and Friday. They will borrow home readers on a Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
What a fantastic week for Year 3 Golden Book! Well done to all the children who got an award this week.

The new home learning themes have also been shared with your child, please discuss with them some ideas on how they might like to present their theme. Please support your child as necessary over the next 12 days ready to bring their projects in to share on Wednesday 24th January 2018. We look forward to seeing all the different creative ways they choose to share their chosen theme.

Please make sure that they spend time at the weekend learning their five individualised words. In the back of their Spelling Journal is a list of words for the Unit. Students can learn these if they wish to challenge themselves. You could also use these words to discuss their meaning and put them into sentences together.
