 Memories of Beacon Hill

As you may, or may not, be aware, we are celebrating Beacon Hill’s 50th anniversary this year, including a special 50th celebration year book. If you are a past member of the Beacon Hill School community we would like to hear from you with any memories, suitable stories or simply any message to be included in the year book.

Please could you send your contribution to alumni@bhs.edu.hk. We would appreciate it if you could send the messages etc in by Friday 4th May. If possible, send us a photo of when you were at BHS!

Thanks in advance.

We have had a busy week finishing our unit on homes in Hong Kong and how they have changed over time and why. We also did the pre assessment for our next unit by building a toothpick structure in groups and then reflected on how well we did. The students continued to practise their sketching skills and have drawn lovely pictures of homes from around the world. They have reflected on what they now think a home is when compared to their pre-assessment when they were asked what homes must have. We finished the week with the summative assessment to consolidate all they have learned this unit
In Maths this week we continued with time. The children have made great progress in telling the time to the quarter hour as well as looking at 5 minute intervals. Some are still finding this challenging, especially telling time “to” the hour so please support your child with this. We finished the week writing problems on time and showing how we answered these.
In English this week the children have continued their comprehension focus of synthesising and how they can combine their prior knowledge with new knowledge and put this into their own words. In addition to this, they have continued to practise note taking and using these to summarise what they have read. They finished the unit by writing an information report on Homes in Hong Kong.

By working together people can achieve more.

We will be inquiring into:

  1. Shared goals in group situations  (connection)
  2. Skills and behaviour that support collaboration (responsibility)
  3. Impact of their behaviour on a shared goal (reflection)

This coming week we will be starting our sixth and final unit, How we organise ourselves.  The children will be doing a provocation by looking at behaviours on the play ground and work in groups to complete a task start to explore the skills required to work successfully in groups.

  • Apply place value to partition and rename four-digit numbers
  • Skip count by twos, fives, tens and hundreds starting from a number other than zero
  • Recognise, model, represent and order four-digit numbers
  • Recognise, model, represent and order four-digit numbers
  • Round numbers to the nearest 10 or 100

This coming week we will be reviewing place value and addition and subtraction strategies. We will be looking at how to use these facts with word problems and how to apply their knowledge to real life situations.

Mathletics passwords are in your child’s diary. Please make sure that an adult supports your child when working through the activities.

This week we will also start to look at how we can connect what we have read to prior experiences and knowledge.

Year 3 will read books from Big Universe on a Monday and Friday.
They will borrow home readers on a Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

homelearning

Students were told the next two themes for their Home Learning. Please encourage your child to choose the theme that interests them. They can decide to use one of the ideas listed or choose their own. We look forward in seeing all the home learning on Wednesday 23rd May.
Please make sure your child has completed the Friday spellings at home and found and learned five new words.
Please make sure that they spend time at the weekend learning their five individualised words. In the back of their Spelling Journal is a list of words for the Unit. Students can learn these if they wish to challenge themselves. You could also use these words to discuss their meaning and put them into sentences together.

Mandarin – All children are encouraged to take a reading book home on the days when they have Mandarin lessons.

Ms Lynn – Please read this week’s assigned book in Mandarin Matrix。
Ms Xu: 完成Google Classroom功课。 记得借书读书。
