Mother Tongue Story Telling
Last year a group of parents told stories to our students in their mother tongue during lunchtimes.  As you can imagine this was very popular with our students and a great way to share the range of languages we speak within our community.  If you are interested please click here to add your details.  Any time you can give and to any year group is really appreciated.  For those interested we can meet to discuss logistics in more details.  If you have any questions please email me at andy.thompson@bhs.edu.hk.

This week the children have organised the rights of their ‘Flour Baby’ and started to take them home as responsible parents. We have talked more about the rights of different children around the world and how their lives are different.

In Maths we have made a start with addition and have been particularly focussing on using a mental strategy called jump strategy by bridging to ten. We have been writing our thinking down to show our learning.

The children have continued to focus on the reading comprehension strategy: Inferring. We have been looking at what different kinds of information we can find out by reading and re-reading short story segments. Our new text type focus is narrative and the children have started to recognise the features of a story.

People worldwide have access to rights and opportunities that can look different.

  1. Difference between needs and wants (Perspective)
  2. Children’s rights and responsibilities (Responsibility)
  3. How children rights are protected (Reflection)

Next week we will be reflecting on the responsibilities they used to look after their flour baby. The children will begin looking into  their chosen right that interests them.

Next week we will continue our focus on mental addition strategies and using them in maths challenges. The strategies we are focusing on are:

Breaking each number into its place value (partitioning / split strategy), e.g. 47 + 78 = (40+70) + (7+8)

Adding up in Chunks (jump strategy), e.g. 78+34=

78+10+10+10+4

Mathletics passwords are in your child’s diary. Please make sure that an adult supports your child when working through the activities.

Our new text type focus will be Narrative writing. Next week the children will be focusing on how to add description to different parts of stories to enhance their writing.
During our reading lessons we are focusing on inferring. Inferring is to be able to ‘read between the lines’, when the author implies something but doesn’t exactly state it in the text.

homelearning
This week the children will be taking home their flour baby to look after. Their home learning will include taking responsibility for the flour baby and adding an entry into the flour babies diary. The two new words for the next home learning will be given out next Thursday.
SPELLING
Please make sure that they spend time at the weekend learning their five individualised words. In the back of their Spelling Journal is a list of words for Unit 2. Students can learn these if they wish to challenge themselves. You could also use these words to discuss their meaning and put them into sentences together.
Mandarin (All children are encouraged to take a reading book home on the days when they have Mandarin lessons.)
Ms Lynn (Home learning #4) – Please practise writing the following words at home: 衣,一,五,雨,我,牙,鱼,木,八,大,马,土。
Ms Xu – 朗读学过的课文,读中文书,练习用普通话讲故事。
