To enhance the construction experiences we will provide in school we have organised a visit to the HK Forest Adventures.  This is an opportunity for our students to design and build on a larger scale using a range of construction materials and tools led by experts.

Dates of the trip
Class 4F – Tues 13th March
Class 4L – Wed 14th March
Class 4W – Thurs 15th March

We will need to leave school at 8:45 am.  Please ensure your child is punctual on that day.  We will return in time for the end of the school day.

Your child will need:

  • PE Kit and rain coat
  • Snack, lunch and water bottle
  • Hat, sunscreen and mosquito repellant

DeliFresh has been cancelled for the day of your trip.  Please make a cheque payable to Beacon Hill School and write your child’s name and class on the back.

Please make sure you have completed the 3-notice and handed in the payment.

World Maths Day is a free, fun, online competition with up to 4 million students world-wide participating. The competition measures speed in arithmetic and numeracy skills on our Live Mathletics platform and runs for 48 hours and is open to all schools around the world. Students compete online with other students and top scores are displayed on a live ‘Hall of Fame’.

Will BHS be the World Maths Day champion in 2018?

On Wednesday 7th March children will have the opportunity to take part in their Maths Lessons.  They will also be able to earn points until Thursday 8th March.  Encourage your child to have fun with Maths and take part at home.

ESF 50th Anniversary Carnival

Friday 23rd March – International Food Fair
This year, for the first time ever, the Year 4 students will be making and running the games in the school hall! This will be a fantastic learning experience for them and will also help the children prepare for Big Business in Year 5. Therefore, we would kindly ask that all students attend the Fair Fair and that they each spend some time helping run their game in the hall. Your support is appreciated!
BHS Dance OFF
Our BHS Dance Off has been postponed until after Easter.  Our student council will be sharing more information next week.  Important things to remember for the Dance off are:
  • To have fun
  • You perform in groups or solo
  • Your dance should be around 1 minute
  • heats for the competition will take place at various lunchtimes after Easter
  • there will be a lower school and upper competition

You can support your child by helping them create and rehearse their dance.

Ukuleles!
Please encourage your child to remember to bring their ukuleles and ukulele booklets to school on the appropriate day. At the moment, we still have quite a few children forgetting their instruments.
4F – Thursday
4L – Tuesday
4W – Tuesday
Ukulele Club – Wednesday lunchtime (this only applies to members of this club and they know who they are).

We were really happy to see so many of you in school for the Student Led Conferences. For the children, the opportunity to share their experiences at Beacon Hill and articulate their learning with their families is incredibly powerful.
Whilst the day itself is very important, the preparation beforehand is almost, if not equally valuable. This is because it provides and excellent opportunity for the students to reflect upon their learning and to set targets for the future.
Portfolios
Please make sure all portfolios are returned by Friday 9th March.

How we organise ourselves

Central Idea

The design and construction of structures reflects their purpose.

Lines of Inquiry

An inquiry into…

  • Designers use and reflect on their plans in order to be successful (REFLECTION)
  • The skills and knowledge needed to build structures (CAUSATION)
  • How purpose affects the design of structures. (CONNECTION)

This week has been taken up with reflecting upon our successes and areas for growth. We have also looked at how purpose affects the design of structures.

“The IB philosophy emphasises the central role that reflection plays in education. All good learning and teaching practice recognizes the need to build in windows of opportunity for students and educators to share thoughtful reflection.”

Approaches to Reflection : http://blogs.ibo.org/blog/2015/10/31/approaches-to-reflection/

Bunting, N. (2015)

Next week we will be looking at the construction of super strong and stable bridges!

Strand Maths: Shape

Central Idea

Shapes can be identified, classified and used in different ways

Lines of Inquiry

An inquiry into:

  • The relationship between 2D and 3D shapes
  • Symmetry and transformations can be found in our environment
  • Angles in 2D and 3D shape

The students have enjoyed preparing for the Student Led Conference by creating wonderful art works. Some classes have worked with multiplication and arrays, and others have created art using rotational symmetry.

Writing to Entertain (First person narrative)

Congratulations to the students who were awarded Golden Book certificates on Monday!
 4F – Chloe Leung
4L –  Enoch Wai, Kylie Lau and Kristy Chan
4W – Aidan Chan

        1. Please complete any outstanding tasks from the School Closure Activity Grid

2. Complete the section of Student Led Conference about ways your growth in learning can be supported.

Spelling

The children have a list of words they need to learn. They should practise these at home in preparation for “buddy spelling tests” (the children testing each other) in class next week.

Reading
The children have been given their Home Reading Journals and are expected to read for 20 minutes per day at their given comprehension age. Children will record the title of their book in their journal. Please discuss your child’s reading and leave a comment in the journal so that they can change their book.
To support their reading development, please make sure of the following:
  • Home reading should be fun not a chore.
  • Keep the timing short, find a comfy, quiet space and have a chat about what your child is reading. This really helps to develop their comprehension skills.
  • There is information about comprehension at the beginning of the journal, which you can use to help guide your discussion with your child. Please also refer to information your class teacher has sent out to you about how to help your child at home.

Mathematics
All children should aim to spend 30 minutes per week completing their assigned Mathletics tasks and/or practising their times tables.

Mandarin (All children are encouraged to take a reading book home on the days when they have Mandarin lessons.)

Ms Lynn (Home learning) – Please check your google classroom for details.

Ms Xu – 记得借书读书,写读书报告,完成课堂未完成的功课。元宵节快乐!
