Year 4 Sharing Day – Friday 22nd September

This is an opportunity for the children to share their learning from our first unit of inquiry with you all. We kindly request that every child has at least one parent in attendance.
The event will take place on Friday 22nd of September and will begin at 9:00am in the school hall. You will follow your child through a series of activities to showcase their learning. The event should finish at 11am.
CLOTHING
Children – wear their casual, comfortable clothing (if it represents something they value that would be great i.e. a sport, nature, etc).
Adults – please be aware you will need to remove your shoes to enter the Drama Studio and you will be participating during the drama session, too, so comfortable clothing is advised.

Giving Back to our Community: Colours Day – Friday 29th September

As part of our 50th celebrations we are aiming to give back to our community by holding an Action Day on the 8th December in partnership with Bethune House, Sunshine Action, Sai Kung Stray Dogs and Soap Cycling. On the 8th December each year group will have the opportunity to help make food parcels to help those who are in need in Hong Kong. More details will follow about that day as we get closer to it. We are aiming high and the amount of money we need to raise equates to $250 per child.

To kick-start our fundraising, we are going to have 4 days of lunchtime activities where children can make a minimum donation of HK$20 to join in fun events such as karaoke. This will build up to a very special day on Friday 29th September we are calling ‘Colours Day’ where all children will take part in one of two sponsored events – either a sponsored walk/run or a sponsored readathon depending on their interest.  Each year group will have half an hour for the events. Sponsor forms can be downloaded and printed off from today’s Newsletter. We encourage all our students and their families to support this day of action to help in our drive to support those in our community who are in need. And of course, on Friday 29th all students should come dressed in their house colours.

We have been doing further inquiring into the connection between our values and beliefs and those of other people. We have worked collaboratively on multimedia presentations with Ms. Kannis and for Drama sessions, too. We have even been sharing our beliefs and values through Art.
Maths
Our newfound knowledge of Area and Perimeter has enabled us to become City Planners! In pairs, we have been creating our own cities and naming them. Then we have added facilities to our map and calculated their area and perimeter.
English
We continue to think about poetry and the vocabulary we are using in our poems, in order to entertain others, is really developing. This week, we have worked on a variety of poetic techniques, including similes, powerful adjectives, Haiku, calligrams and Kennings. We look forward to sharing our anthologies with you next Friday.

Student Council
Every year, students vote for a peer to represent their class to join discussions with Mr Thompson in working towards making the school a better place as well act as the communication link between the students and the school.

Who We Are: Our beliefs and values can influence our attitudes and behaviour

Lines of Inquiry
An inquiry into:

  •  Our beliefs (FORM)
  •  Where our values come from (CONNECTION)
  •  Differing behaviours and attitudes (PERSPECTIVE)

We will be consolidating all our learning and new ideas in relation to our beliefs and values and how they impact on our behaviour. We will continue to develop our Drama skills and make connections between our U.O.I. and poetry.

Measurement: Area and Perimeter

Central Idea

Events have attributes that can be measured using appropriate tools.

Lines of Inquiry

An inquiry into:

  • The selection and correct use of standard units

Next week the children will continue to develop their cities and undertake other open-ended, rich tasks on area and perimeter.

Purpose: Writing to entertain
Next week the children will be inquiring into calligrams and shape poems and putting the finishing touches to their poetry collections.

Comprehension Strategies

Visualising: Readers create pictures in their heads.
Self Monitoring: Readers know it is their job to make sense of texts.
Next week the children will continue to practise picking books that are just right for them to read as well as making note of their fix-up strategies for when they get stuck in reading.

Congratulations to this week’s Golden Book certificate winners!

It must include the following information…
– Beacon Hill School
– Year 4 Camp 2017
– Cheung Chau
You may use a maximum of 4 colours in your design and then everything should be outlined in black pen. Design should be on A4 white paper.
Winning design will be on everyone’s T-shirt.
Runner up’s design will be on everyone’s Camp booklet.
Deadline: Wednesday 27th September
Spelling
The children have a list of words they need to learn. They should practise these at home in preparation for “buddy spelling tests” (the children testing each other) in class next week.

Reading
The children have been given their Home Reading Journals and are expected to read for 20 minutes per day at their given comprehension age. Children will record the title of their book in their journal. Please discuss your child’s reading and leave a comment in the journal so that they can change their book.
To support their reading development, please make sure of the following:
  • Home reading should be fun not a chore.
  • Keep the timing short, find a comfy, quiet space and have a chat about what your child is reading. This really helps to develop their comprehension skills.
  • There is information about comprehension at the beginning of the journal, which you can use to help guide your discussion with your child. Please also refer to information your class teacher has sent out to you about how to help your child at home.

Mathematics
All children should aim to spend 30 minutes per week completing their assigned Mathletics tasks and/or practising their times tables.

Mandarin (All children are encouraged to take a reading book home on the days when they have Mandarin lessons.)
