Keeping our playground clean
This week lots of children bought cakes from the bake sale. Each cake is handed to the children in a tissue. Unfortunately tissue cannot be recycled in Hong Kong and so will now have to go to the landfills. Also, many children left bits of cake and tissue on the floor as they did not have a container to eat from. It would be great if on bake sale days the children could please bring a reusable container to school to put the cake in while they eat it to stop the rubbish problem.
The next bake sale is at the beginning of February. Thank you very much!

Image result for we need you

In less than a week we are holding our very own Living Museum event, here at BHS!

Your children need your help to ensure they look the part on the day. Speak to your children to find out what they need in order to come to school dressed up as a person from their chosen civilisation. Please help us to make this day a success. We are not expecting Hollywood quality costumes, this should be a fun project for you to work on and definitely not stressful.

Healthy Living at BHS
We promote healthy living at BHS and therefore children should only bring water to school. Please do not send milk drinks, sugary drinks or any other kind of drink. We have water fountains and taps where students can refill their (BHS) water bottles throughout the day.

Behaviour management event Discipline without shouting

We are delighted to welcome back Marie Marchand to present at Beacon Hill School on January 31st from 6-8pm. This year’s focus will be positive behaviour management strategies for parents- Discipline without Shouting. Please see the details and sign up via the gateway https://tg.esf.edu.hk The cost will be $50 per person.

Marie is an excellent speaker- both entertaining and informative and we thoroughly recommend any parents from year 1-6 to come and enjoy her presentation.

Year 6 have been incredibly busy working together in their groups to create their living museum displays in preparation for next week. We have seen building, crafting, designing, painting, script writing to name but a few skills taking place in the Year 6 classrooms this week. The children have been working on organising their time, communicating within their groups, organising information, prioritising with tasks and deadlines and ensuring that they are knowledgeable within their chosen civilisation. We look forward to walking around each of the group’s displays next week to explore your learning.

Transdisciplinary Theme: Where we are in place and time

Central Idea- Past civilisations can be used to make connections to present day societies

Lines of Inquiry  – We will inquire into…

  1. Characteristics of past civilisations and societies (form)
  2. Reliability and relevance of evidence (reflection)
  3. Connections between past discoveries and modern-day advances (connection)

The children will continue to work on their creations for the living museum presentations on Friday. Remember to include character information, any props necessary and your costume on the day.

Year 6 are also attending the Agents of Change conference at KJS on Thursday where 28 NGOs will be present, talk about their work and share how the students can take action to support their cause. We hope that this will be a great opportunity to support the Year 6 students with their PYP exhibition. Don’t forget to bring your schedule for workshops and a pen and paper for note taking.

Central Idea

We use the same rules for the computation of decimal fractions as for whole numbers

We will be applying our knowledge of adding and subtracting fractions to solve word problems in number math. In strand math, we will further our knowledge of representing and analysing data through a variety of charts and graphs.

The classes will be incorporating language and UOI to help write scripts, annotations and speeches for their living museum. They will focus on transferring their notes into their own words as well as making their speech interesting and unique to listen to.

Year 6 will also continue to apply their knowledge of CARP to evaluate websites when sourcing information online. Remember to take action and avoid becoming associated with any websites with misconstrued or unreliable information.

Spelling : The children should be tested on their words at home 3 times per week ready for our buddy test on Friday.  Any words that the children spell incorrectly during the buddy test on Friday will get carried over to next week’s ‘Words I need to learn…’  All children need to remember to bring in their Spelling Journals each day.

Reading : Each child should be reading throughout the week. Don’t forget to think about your weekly reflection for your Reading Journals!
