Stationery

It has been noted that many children are without the correct equipment and therefore certain lessons are challenging for them. In Year 6 we ask students to bring their own stationary kits to school. As leaners they are expected to be organised, prepared, responsible and Independent, this is good practice for when they go to Secondary School. From discussions with the children many of them are missing, calculators (not scientific), geometry sets, 30cm rulers, scissors and headphones. Please talk to your child about their stationery needs.

School Photographs 23rd – 24th October 2017

Our school photographer will be in Beacon Hill on Monday 23rd and Tuesday 24th October.  All children should come to school in their school uniform on these days.  If your child has PE on Monday or Tuesday then please make sure that they bring their PE kit to school and they will be able to change at school.

Healthy Living at BHS
We promote healthy living at BHS and therefore children should only bring water to school. Please do not send milk drinks, sugary drinks or any other kind of drink. We have water fountains and taps where students can refill their (BHS) water bottles throughout the day.
LEAP 2017
Year 6 students went to LEAP this week. Through an exciting and entertaining session full of role play, discussion, interactive games and new knowledge the children learnt about the effects of stress and alcohol, developed refusal skills around peer pressure and learnt strategies to help develop their resilience skills.
Conflict

Year 6 have continued to look into the area of conflict, what it means to them personally, at a local level (home and school) and globally.

Working in small groups the children have looked at different ways in which they could re-write the Central Idea making it more accessible for them.

As we begin to think about our new comprehension strategy in reading we are developing our knowledge about Inference. We have discussed ways in which we can make meaning of images and text to demonstrate a better understanding using clues. This will be ongoing throughout the unit, it should help us with our new text type too.

Year 6 Action Board – Global Goals

In September 2015, 193 world leaders agreed to 17 Global Goals for Sustainable Development. If these Goals are completed, it would mean an end to extreme poverty, inequality and climate change by 2030.

Our governments have a plan to save our planet…it’s our job to make sure they stick to it.

The Global Goals are only going to work if we fight for them and you can’t fight for your rights if you don’t know what they are. We believe the Goals are only going to be completed if we can make them famous.

In Year 6 we are keeping track of all the amazing Action happening at school and at home.

Transdisciplinary Theme: Sharing the Planet

Central Idea- Reaching a resolution during periods of conflict is influenced by the actions and reactions of all involved.

Lines of Inquiry  – We will inquire into…

  1. Causes of conflict (causation, perspective)
  2. Conflict resolution and management (responsibility)
  3. Our responsibility as a member of a community. (Responsibility)

In preparation for the Year 6’s becoming conflict monitors, we have been running through many different playground scenarios and discussing the best way to resolve them.

Number Maths – Year 6 will continue to investigate and share a variety of strategies when adding and subtracting decimal numbers.

6D have been using their addition strategies to help plan my Christmas vacation!

Strand Maths – Year 6 are exploring and learning how to measure the properties of circles. They have been practicing drawing circles by freehand and by using a compass.

We will continue to draw inferences when we read by looking at a variety of passages from texts. Year 6 will be focusing on the story ‘Half A Man’ by Michael Morpurgo using the illustrations and descriptions to apply their learning of inference.

Year 6 have also been looking at fairy tales and discussing the different types of conflict within the stories.

Spelling : The children should be tested on their words at home 3 times per week ready for our buddy test on Friday.  Any words that the children spell incorrectly during the buddy test on Friday will get carried over to next week’s ‘Words I need to learn…’  All children need to remember to bring in their Spelling Journals each day.

Reading : Each child should be reading throughout the week. Don’t forget to think about your weekly reflection for your Reading Journals!
