This week the children have settled back into school smoothly ready for their final term in Year 1. Some classes have had great fun making their own paper using recycled paper. We have enjoyed doing drama in the drama room, extra music and making clay plates in preparation for the sharing day later this term. All the children who had their immunizations this morning were very brave.

Hats and Water Bottles
Now that the weather is warming up please ensure that your child comes to school prepared with a full water bottle and BHS hat. Please ensure that the children are in suitable clothing for the weather, some of the children have been very hot in the classrooms.
Zen Organic Farm
Next Monday we will be going to Zen Organic Farm near Fanling. The children will not need lunch as they will be making their own pizza lunch using fresh ingredients unless your child has any food allergies, in which case you may wish to send a packed lunch with them. If your child has any food allergies please let your class teacher know before Monday. Please ensure that your child has a small backpack that they can carry themselves. They will need a water bottle, a small snack and a waterproof jacket, if necessary. Please make sure that your child is wearing suncream and insect repellant.
If you are a parent helper on this excursion, please arrive by 9am for a short briefing with Miss Chung.

 Sharing the planet

Central Idea: Plants and animals depend of each other for survival in their environments

During U.O.I next week the children will be working with a partner to create a diorama based on what they have learnt about the connections between living things. They will also be making their own paper and starting to plan and create pieces of art work based on the work of Eric Carle. Ms Cassie and Mr Gibson will continue to work with the Year 1 students next week.

Song

As part of our preparations for Year 1 Sharing Day the Year 1 children have been learning a song in their music lessons. Please help your child to learn the words. Here is a link to the song,

Cooking at Home

Khristie and her family have been busy at home preparing and making yummy Tiramisu. It is lovely to see so many children enjoying cooking and baking at home with their parents.

maths

Numbers can be added and subtracted

Next week in Maths we will be building upon the children’s understanding of addition and subtraction by teaching specific strategies such as counting on and counting back using number lines and bridging across 10 using equipment such as, Numicon and Dienes Blocks. The children will also be applying their knowledge by carrying out a problem solving task based on addition and subtraction.

Next week the children will be reflecting on their trip to the Zen Organic Farm. They will also be writing a simple explanation text which will link to their UOI work based on the connections between the honeybee and other living things. When writing simple explanations the children will need to include reasons as to why things happen and include technical vocabulary. When checking their work they will be ensuring that they have used finger spaces, capital letters, full stops and that their writing makes sense.
Big Universe
The children have now had the opportunity to explore Big Universe and next week they will be using their own accounts to read books of their choosing during their class reading sessions.
Phonics

Next week we will be continuing with the Set 5 of phonics:

ch, sh, th, wh

Camera Words:  like   do    says    what   going   give

Please continue to support our work in school by playing the suggested games on the back of the bookmark that was sent home a few weeks ago.

The next Golden Book assembly will be on Monday 8th May
