This week the children have continued learning about the different continents and oceans, they have been creating their own fact-files filled with lots of information. The children have been enjoying their Information Literacy lessons with Ms Jeves, who has been working with them on the determining importance comprehension key. We have been introduced to some new concepts in Maths and been learning to create persuasive posters during Language time. On Wednesday we had lots of fun with Miss Chung when we used our measurement skills to prepare the food, drinks and gifts for the parent helper lunch. With Mr Teahan we have completed our football unit in PE.
People record the features of places and environments in different ways to help us make sense of the world we live in.
Lines of Inquiry
- The variety of places and environments around the world. (form)
- The ways people record geographical features on maps (function)
- The relationship of our location to other parts of the world (connection)
Over the next week the children will continue to gather and collect information about different cities and countries within a continent. They have begun to compile a special fact- file with information about their chosen country. The children have been looking for details such as; the location and climate, a famous person and celebrations/holidays. They will also compare their chosen country to another place in the world. They will be using different sources to gather this information from child friendly search engines to Atlases and books on different countries from the library. We will be using Google Satellite and other sources to identify the reasons that cities and towns are located where they are. As we have been looking at the features of a mountain with Miss Jeves and on a map, we drew our own landscape picture using different media.
Measurement involves comparing, ordering and sequencing objects and events
The children have been inquiring into the ways different objects can be measured using formal and informal units. They have been learning how to choose the appropriate tool to measure e.g. metre stick. scales etc. Each class has been looking at a different aspect of measurement and over the next week we will continue to cover; length, mass and capacity. They have been introduced to estimating and are able to make sensible estimates using familiar units as a reference.
We have introduced the children to persuasive writing, in particular how advertisements can persuade. We have begun creating advertisements to persuade people to come to Hong Kong for a holiday. We have considered the layout, headings, font and words chosen to attract our audience.
We will continue to look at persuasive language and introduce simple examples of alliteration. We have used our language and info lit skills to look for key points to add to our fact-files during UOI.
We will continue our work with Ms Jeves and using De Bono’s 6 thinking hats to determine the following during our Information Literacy lessons. This week we have been working on our ‘Green Hat Thinking’.
- Process- What thinking is needed?
- Feelings- How do I feel about this?
- Benefits- Why is this a good idea?
- Facts- What do I need to find out?
- Creativity-What new ideas are possible?
- Caution- What problems could arise?
