Family borrowing – As you will have seen in the school newsletter it is now possible for parents, younger children and other family members to borrow from our library. By registering for a family borrowing card you can borrow two books from any section of the library, including the new Parent Collection which contains books about healthy living, behaviour management, fun art activities and days out for children in Hong Kong. The library is open for family borrowing at these times…

Scientific investigation rotations
With a new unit of inquiry to sink our teeth into we began science rotations. The children are moving around school on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday to enjoy learning about the different aspects of scientific investigations. From searching for hidden limes to measuring temperature and even building their own vessels, year 6 are really enjoying themselves and it is provoking some excellent thinking that will help with our brand new inquiry.
On the Sports’ Field
Year 6 have been representing the school in yet more sport. The mixed netball team were in action last weekend as well as the girls team. Both teams performed brilliantly, a lot of the players had never thrown a netball before this season so well done to them!
Christmas is coming
Students in year 6 are now delivering cards on a daily basis. Our students are taking the task seriously but having fun at the same time by wearing Santa hats or reindeer antlers, they are such good sports!

and in with the new.
We finished up with UOI 2 and have dived straight in to UOI 3. After finishing the summative task and reflecting the children in year 6 are tuning in to their new unit and loving every minute of it.
Year 6 have unscrambled the central idea, defined and researched key words and gotten involved in many experiments.
Number Maths – Fractions, decimals and percentages
Central Idea : Fractions, decimal fractions and percentages are ways of representing whole-part relationships.
Some classes have completed some pre assessments so we can assess the knowledge and move forward in the coming weeks.
Strand Maths – Shape and space
Central Idea : Consolidating what we know of geometric concepts to allow us to make sense of and interact with our world.

NB – A lot of our maths has taken place during science rotations this week, looking at how we can collect, analyse and present data.
Explanation writing will be the focus over the coming weeks. The children have already began deconstructing texts and recapping on what the features are of writing an exciting explanation. With so many awesome science experiments going on in year 6 there will be plenty of opportunity to make some great explanation texts.
Classes are always studying word level work as well as punctuation and grammar. Students in 6H enjoyed presenting about the etymology of words that they have been researching over the last few weeks.
As always, buddy spelling tests are held every Friday so Spelling Journals are an absolute necessity for Fridays. Spelling Journals need to be back in to school everyday to enable students to work on the spelling investigations in the back of the journal throughout the week and also to add personal spelling words to as they arise during the weekdays.
Spelling : Spelling Journal homework – 3 practice spelling tests to be conducted under the supervision of an adult at home, daily spelling practice and any additional journal tasks set by the class teacher.
Reading : Weekly reflections to be completed at least once a week. Children need to ensure they are reading at home each night for at least 20 mins and to write one weekly reflection about their reading in their diaries. Parents are not required to write a comment or to sign the book. However, continued interest and involvement in your child’s reading would be appreciated and will assist in their development.
