Music Monthly Update #2

Understanding the concept of beat or pulse in music and songs.

Learning short action songs and adding percussion instruments.

Exploring the variety of sounds that we can produce on non-pitched percussion instruments in the classroom and learning how to control them.

Understanding the difference between beat and rhythm.

Learning that some music has a strong beat and some may have almost no pulse.

Using instruments to create classroom arrangements of songs such as “A Sailor went to Sea”.

We will also learn some action songs and how to conduct.

Examine the way composers convey meaning in their music using different tempos, dynamics and and pitch.

Listen to parts of “Carnival of the Animals” and encourage students to describe different creatures using various classroom instruments.

Students are exploring patterns in music.

The way in which composers use different types of structures to compose music.

We will be playing pieces of music that incorporate ostinato patterns such as “Tubular Bells” by Mike Oldfield and Pachelbel’s “Canon”, as well as other examples.

As part of their unit on Migration we will consider the the forced migration of African slaves to the USA in the 17th and 18th centuries.

We will be examining the cultural traditions they took with them and explore the music that developed during this period.

We are exploring the way composers use devices such as ostinatos and repeated notes to create tension and excitement in music.

Students are composing atmospheric music for a sports TV theme.

Community Choir

Our BHS Community Choir will resume after the October half term break.  This is open to all parents of BHS students and to BHS Staff. The choir will be rehearsing on Thursday evenings from 7pm. We would hope to perform at the BHS Christmas Concert. No auditions or previous singing experience – just lots of enthusiasm needed!
