Music Monthly Update #3

Understanding the concept of beat or pulse in music and songs.

Learning short action songs and adding percussion instruments.

Exploring the variety of sounds that we can produce on non-pitched percussion instruments in the classroom and learning how to control them.

As part of their UOI, students will explore the role of music in festivals and celebrations.

They will learn some Christmas songs such as “Little Donkey” and also start thinking about music from other festivals that we celebrate at this time of year such as Diwali and Hanuka.

Examine the way composers convey meaning in their music using different tempos, dynamics and and pitch.

Listen to parts of “Carnival of the Animals” and encourage students to describe different creatures using various classroom instruments.

Students are exploring patterns in music.

The way in which composers use different types of structures to compose music.

We will be playing pieces of music that incorporate ostinato patterns such as “Tubular Bells” by Mike Oldfield and Pachelbel’s “Canon”, as well as other examples.

We will be learning about rounds in music.

The students will learn to sing several examples such as “I Hear Thunder”, “Shalom, my Friend”, and “Autumn Leaves are Falling”.

They will also be practising instrumental versions and exploring how to create their own.

We are exploring the way composers use devices such as ostinatos and repeated notes to create tension and excitement in music.

Students have been composing atmospheric music for a sports TV theme.
