Dear Parents,

Christmas Concert

Thank you to all those who came along to our Christmas Concert on Wednesday evening.  Well done to the Junior Choir, which is made up of our Year 2 & 3 students.  They performed beautifully and had so many new songs to learn.  Many thanks to our Community Choir , who have given up many hours after school and in the evening to rehearse.  If you enjoyed what you heard, perhaps you may consider signing up in the new year.  A big well done also to our Chamber Choir.  Wednesday evening was their 5th out of 6 performances around Hong Kong this year!

An evening of this scale doesn’t just happen and I sincerely thank our PTA members, Site Staff and Teachers who worked behind the scenes to prepare and support on this evening.

Special thanks to Mrs Dale, Mrs Mulligan, Ms Gong, Miss Kannis, Mrs Blair and Mr Gibson for their hard work and dedication in leading the fabulous choirs!

More photos can be found HERE.

Operation Santa

On Wednesday 12th December, we held our Second BHS ‘Bake Off’ competition. A variety of cakes, biscuits, and cookies arrived that morning and filled our foyer with the best smells! Mrs Blair was our resident Bake Off judge and what a difficult time she had!

Our winners were chosen and announced in assembly and all bakes were sold in a very successful bake sale at the Christmas Concert. We raised a tremendous $5828 which will be donated to Operation Santa Claus.

Our winning entry this year goes to Shawn, Zach & Hailey Lee

Learning Technologies

This week we welcomed the CEO of Micro:Bit, Gareth Stockdale, to view the amazing projects our students have worked on.  Gareth has been following Mr Lowe’s posts on Twitter and was impressed by the range of creative things our students are doing and has featured the BHS projects on his Micro:Bit website.  Mr Lowe and Miss Mak also took a group of students to the Learning and Teaching Expo to showcase their learning.

Portfolios and Mid-Year Reports

At BHS students create Portfolios of their work each year as an opportunity to celebrate their progress and learning. Today, your child will come home with their Portfolio which will contain a selection of learning chosen by your child and class teacher. These pieces of work have been carefully chosen to show progress and are those your child is most proud of. Please take time to enjoy the Portfolio with your child and to celebrate their progress. Portfolios should be returned by Monday 7th January as they will be added to in Term 2 and 3.

In addition, your child’s Mid-Year Report will be accessible today after 4pm. You will receive information about your child’s learning in English, Maths and their first two Units of Inquiry.

Wellbeing Focus – GIVE

In assembly this week, Muchan, one of our Diversity House Captains shared how ‘Give’ is the most important aspect of wellbeing for him.  Muchan gave a great example of how spending time with his brother doing something his brother enjoys is important.  Muchan talked about how our time is valuable gift we can give to somebody else.

‘Sometimes what people need is assistance rather than things.  Spread some kindness by donating a skill.’

Giving in this way serves the dual purpose of fulfilling a practical need and making someone feel supported.

If you would like to know more about how BHS are approaching wellbeing, please sign up on the eNotice for a Parent workshop scheduled for Thursday 10th January.  There is a morning and evening session option.

Mandarin Mondays

We look forward to seeing the students for our Mandarin Mondays after the holidays.

At BHS we value the importance of developing the ‘whole’ child and this means valuing their achievement and interests outside of school.  If your child has achieved something special, we would be happy to share that with the BHS community through this newsletter.  Please email details and a photograph to kannis.tsui@bhs.edu.hk

Whilst excited about the Festive Season, I also reflect on a very successful Term 1 at BHS. I feel extremely proud to be the Acting Principal of BHS and have a genuine sense of privilege to work with such wonderful students, staff and parents. Thank you for your continued support and collaboration with BHS.

Enjoy the holiday break with your child and have a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year wherever you are spending it. I am going home to Wales to spend some quality time with my family. I look forward to seeing everyone after the holidays!

ESF Kowloon Schools Football Tournament

Well done to the Year 6 and Year 5 football players for their great performance at the ESF Kowloon Schools Football tournament organised by Beacon Hill School. This was the last tournament of the year and both teams should be proud of their efforts. The Year 6s finished 3rd overall (out of 4) and narrowly missed out on the final and the Year 5s team finished second (out of four).

Thanks to the parents who came to watch and Mr Thompson for his coaching throughout the year.
