Dear Parents,

Well done to all our students and families who took part in the ESF HK Run last Saturday.  It was certainly a beautiful day for it.  Thank you also to our ‘Beacon Hill-ers’ who performed some Chinese dances and delighted us with their singing in Mandarin!  Thank you to the adults who came along to support!

Our Year 1 and 2 had a great family day out at their Chinese New Year Family Dim Sum and Flower Market trip.  It was nice to see everyone getting into the festive spirit.

This morning we celebrated with our Chinese Cultural Activities Day.  The children had great fun learning about traditional chinese customs, creating art pieces and taking part in some active traditional chinese pastimes.  There was a lovely atmosphere around the school as the older children supported our younger students with their learning.

For more photos, click HERE.

Our Chinese New Year festivities culminated in an assembly for our students.  The children were entertained by singers, dancers, models and comedians.  There is so much talent at BHS!  Of course, no CNY celebration is complete without the fantastic lion dance performance.  Thank you to the PTA for funding this performance for us.

Student Achievement

January 26 – Daphne Luk (3G) performed her first harp performance. She played 2 songs, which were Lavender Blue and Le Petit Roi d’Yvetôt. She played perfectly and gained a valuable experience of stage performance. Well done Daphne!

At BHS we value the importance of developing the ‘whole’ child and this means valuing their achievement and interests outside of school.  If your child has achieved something special, we would be happy to share that with the BHS community through this newsletter.  Please email details and a photograph to kannis.tsui@bhs.edu.hk

Important Dates

I am looking forward to enjoying the traditions and celebrating the New Year with my family who will arrive from the UK this weekend.

May I take this opportunity to wish all our families a HAPPY, HEALTHY and SUCCESSFUL Year of the Pig!

Gong Xi Fa Cai!  Kung Hei Fat Choi!

Kind regards,

Susan

Parent Volunteers Needed

Our Year 5 students are currently working on their big business unit where they are creating their own businesses and running a market day to raise money.  As part of the unit the children have been asked to give a presentation to a panel of business experts.  We are looking for volunteer business experts who can offer advice to the children and give positive feedback to groups of children.  The presentations are held over two days, on Thursday 28th February and Friday 1st March.

If you are able to be an expert on either day, or even for part of one of the days, please email me at: chad.pheasant@bhs.edu.hk

Mandarin Mondays

Mandarin Mondays will resume on Monday 11th February at lunchtimes in the Learning Centre.

Action in the PYP at BHS

It has been great celebrating the talents and achievements of our students through the ’Student Achievement’ section in the newsletter.  We would like to do something similar with Student Action.  Action in the PYP is when students are inspired through their learning and their experiences to make a difference to their lives or the community connected to real life issues and opportunities.  We would like to celebrate our students taking action outside of school.

Please could you email examples to kannis.tsui@bhs.edu.hk and they will be shared through our newsletter.

There are different types of Action.  We would like to start with a focus on Participation.  See below for a definition and examples

Type of Action Examples
Participation

Being actively involved in their learning and contributing as an individual or a group

Getting involved with community projects

Making appropriate choices and taking responsibility to help people

Taking on different roles e.g. being a leader, completing my chores, working in a group, looking after my pet

Taking part in any decision making process

Joining a new club

Book Drive

Brody, Ryan and Muchan in Year 6 are organising a Book Drive to help spread our love of reading.  The Sony Corporation will collect books to create mobile libraries in South Africa for schools that do not have enough books for children to read.  If you have books that are:

  1. Written in English language
  2. Suitable for 6-12 years old
  3. Pages should not be yellow or brown (due to aging)
  4. No missing or torn pages
  5. No scribbling on the pages
  6. No textbooks
  7. No magazines
  8. No encyclopedias

Please send them to school.  There will be a collection box in the school foyer from Monday 21st January. Any books you can donate will help spread the enjoyment of reading.

Wanted: Old Electronics

We are hoping to collect old electronic or battery operated items and toys that have moving parts that are no longer needed as part of our Makers stock.  If you have anything you can donate please send it to school and put it in the collection box in the foyer labelled Old Electronics.

Many thanks.

Community Choir

Thank you to the Community Choir for their wonderful performances at our Chinese New Year performances this week.  If you are interested in joining our community choir, we rehearse on Thursdays at 3pm and 7pm in the Music Room.

This is open to all parents of BHS students, ex-parents of BHS and to BHS Staff. Our next performance will be at the International Food Fair. No auditions or previous singing experience – just lots of enthusiasm needed!

Table Tennis

In the Kowloon West inter-primary schools table tennis competition 2018-19, BHS team (Andrew Chan, Donovan Yim, Jonathan Lau, Trevor Tsang) got the 4th place in Grade B boys 2-week tournament at Lai Chi Kok Park Sports Centre, out of 23 primary schools.  The boys have given their best, fighting with heart and soul for the school.  Andrew is elected as the outstanding player of the tournament.  The bronze medal match was a heartbreaking loss to Choi Kai Yau School 2:3.  Yet our boys have played at an outstanding level.  They did enjoy a fairy-tale run to the last four, which gives BHS team as one of the four seeded teams in 2019-20 tournament.

Congratulations to Andrew (6D) for being named the outstanding player of the tournament.

Excellent team spirit BHS from the boys!!

Wellbeing Focus at West Island School

We are writing to invite you to an upcoming forum for HK parents, that West Island School is organising in association with the KELY Support Group, on mental health and wellbeing of our youth. This forum is open to all parents/guardians (ESF/non-ESF), who would like to understand and advocate for their child’s mental health care and open up to the issues facing young people today.

A group of WIS students from Years 10 & 11 have been working closely with the KELY group (supported by the Weez Project), as part of the Talk2Me programme, and have gathered hundreds of questions and concerns from young people. At this interactive session, we will  have a panel of esteemed mental health experts who will provide informative and helpful responses to these burning questions on mental health and wellness.

The event is scheduled for Wednesday February 13.

The link for registering and for more details can be found here – https://goo.gl/mKP6G9.

If there are any questions, please do get in touch.

Best,

Mukta
