Dear Parents,

I hope you had a lovely Chinese New Year holiday!  The second half of Term 2 has got off to a busy start with lots happening.

Today, we welcomed students from Lau Tak Primary school as part of Inclusivity House’s chosen charity, Lok Sing Tong.  Garnet, Brody and Mr Thompson arranged for the students to play and learn together.  We truly showed what an inclusive community we are!

This week we also held our Year 1 & 2 Sports Day.  It was a beautiful day and the students had so much fun trying new activities and being active.  Well done to all the students for ‘having a go’ at all the activities.  The ‘Throw the Rubber Chicken’ was a particular hit!  Thank you to Mr Teahan for organising the event.

Student Achievement

January 27 – Hayley Gan (3M) was presented with a trophy for her achievement in the UK Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) Ballet examination during the Annual Performance and Graduation Gala. She obtained Distinction in the Ballet Primary Grade examination. Well done Hayley!

February 2 – Karan Mukhi Santino (5C) and Sofia Mukhi Santino prepared and gave out bags of food to the elderly without shelter around Sham Sui Po. They do this every 1-2 months with their family and friends. This time round, they prepared 100 bags of food which included a fruit, some snacks and some drinks. They had also ordered 100 hot meals from a restaurant to go with these bags of food. Karan and Sofia both got really involved in preparing the bags and then distributing them. Great work Karan! Great job Sofia!

February 9 – Charlie (5C) participated in the 2019 Dance World Cup Hong Kong Qualifying Match.  She had competed in two classes, Solo Hip Hop and Solo Tap, and both were  placed first.  Her Hip Hop dance, Monster, was awarded 83.66 points, which make her qualified for entering the 2019 Dance World Cup Final in Braga, Portugal.  It will certainly be a fantastic experience for Charlie to compete on stage with other international contestants, and to make new friends through the language of dance. Awesome job Charlie!

At BHS we value the importance of developing the ‘whole’ child and this means valuing their achievement and interests outside of school.  If your child has achieved something special, we would be happy to share that with the BHS community through this newsletter.  Please email details and a photograph to kannis.tsui@bhs.edu.hk

Parent Volunteers Needed

Our Year 5 students are currently working on their big business unit where they are creating their own businesses and running a market day to raise money.  As part of the unit the children have been asked to give a presentation to a panel of business experts.  We are looking for volunteer business experts who can offer advice to the children and give positive feedback to groups of children.  The presentations are held on Thursday 28th February.

If you are able to be an expert, please email me at: chad.pheasant@bhs.edu.hk

Mandarin Mondays

Mandarin Club is back! Our next Mandarin Club is on Monday, 18th February. This time, we will celebrate an important Chinese festival, the Spring Lantern Festival. The Lantern Festival or the Spring Lantern Festival is a Chinese festival celebrated on the fifteenth day of the first month in the Chinese Lunar calendar. It marks the final day of the traditional Chinese New Year celebrations. This year, the Spring Lantern Festival falls on the 19th of February, which is the day after our coming Mandarin Club. The Spring Lantern Festival is a festival with great significance in Chinese Culture. During the Spring Lantern Festival, children go out at night carrying paper lanterns and solve riddles on the lanterns (猜灯谜 cāidēngmí). To celebrate this important festival, we will play some riddle games in our coming Mandarin Club.

Action in the PYP at BHS

It has been great celebrating the talents and achievements of our students through the ’Student Achievement’ section in the newsletter.  We would like to do something similar with Student Action.  Action in the PYP is when students are inspired through their learning and their experiences to make a difference to their lives or the community connected to real life issues and opportunities.  We would like to celebrate our students taking action outside of school.

Please could you email examples to kannis.tsui@bhs.edu.hk and they will be shared through our newsletter.

There are different types of Action.  We would like to start with a focus on Participation.  See below for a definition and examples

Type of Action Examples
Participation

Being actively involved in their learning and contributing as an individual or a group

Getting involved with community projects

Making appropriate choices and taking responsibility to help people

Taking on different roles e.g. being a leader, completing my chores, working in a group, looking after my pet

Taking part in any decision making process

Joining a new club
