Dear Parents,

BHS

Principal Appointment

You will have received a letter from ESF announcing the appointment of Mrs. Brenda Cook as the new Principal of BHS starting in August 2019.

Brenda has a long leadership history within ESF and will be in a strong position to lead BHS forward.  The Senior Leadership team will be working closely with Brenda to ensure a smooth transition and I know that you will join me in welcoming Brenda to the BHS Family in the coming year.

BHS

Student Led Conferences

It was lovely to see our families today at the Student Led Conferences.  There was a lovely buzz around the school as the students confidently shared their learning with their parents.

Year 5 Big Business Pitches & Market Day

Last Thursday, our Year 5 students came to school as business men and women.  They confidently presented their ‘Big Business’ ideas to a panel.  The panelists were impressed by the creativity of products and games, in addition to their enthusiastic pitches.  Thank you to our panelists for giving up their time to support the students’ learning.

BHS

Next Friday is Market Day.  Please support our Year 5 Business ventures by giving your child some money to spend.  We would like to encourage the children to also bring their own recycle bags for shopping.

Health & Safety

Car Parking Outside School

We ask parents not to stop or park immediately outside the school as this is where our school buses drop off and wait to pick up the children at the start and end of the day and also where we have our crossing patrol. There is plenty of space further up Ede Road which means a great opportunity for a little exercise walking down to the school to pick up your child and back up to your car. We have been talking with our local Police Community Relations division who are always very helpful and understanding, but clearly have to respond to calls from neighbours who complain about cars blocking the road. I ask for your help and mindfulness to ensure the safety of everyone.

Student Achievement

March 3 – Glendon Tsoi (5D) participated in the Allstar Cup Fencing Team Competition (1st season) Epee Team Under 10.  His team lost 7-30 at the beginning, then won 44-26 and 40-37.  Finally, they got the 2nd-runner up.  It is his first prize after he changed from foil to epee fencing since last summer. Well done Glendon!

BHS

March 3 – Cesar Chan (1P) passed the Taekwondo assessment today and promoted from “green” belt to “green-blue” belt. Cesar has been playing Taekwondo for 2 years. He has exceled himself through these belt assessment challenges over the past years. He has also learnt how to be disciplined and made lots of new friends in Taekwondo class. Good job Cesar!

BHS

March 7 – Ryan Yip (2F) recently participated in the 71st Hong Kong Schools Music Festival. He competed in the Graded Piano Solo – Grade 2 competition and has won the 3rd place with a mark of 87 points.

BHS

At BHS we value the importance of developing the ‘whole’ child and this means valuing their achievement and interests outside of school.  If your child has achieved something special, we would be happy to share that with the BHS community through this newsletter.  Please email details and a photograph to kannis.tsui@bhs.edu.hk

Action in PYP

March 3 – Charlotte Ma (3W) and Heston Ma (4W) took part in a lion dancing experience as volunteers at the street parade of the Tai Kok Tsui Temple Fair. They had so much fun performing lion dancing for the bystanders along the busy streets!

They were both very pleased that they could be a part of such a great event which aims at cultivating community interests in Chinese Culture and bonding in the local community!

BHS

It has been great celebrating the talents and achievements of our students through the ’Student Achievement’ section in the newsletter.  We would like to do something similar with Student Action.  Action in the PYP is when students are inspired through their learning and their experiences to make a difference to their lives or the community connected to real life issues and opportunities.  We would like to celebrate our students taking action outside of school.

Please could you email examples to kannis.tsui@bhs.edu.hk and they will be shared through our newsletter.

BHS’s Second Family Makathon on Saturday 2nd March

On another glorious Saturday morning eager children from year 1-3 and their families gathered for our second BHS Family Makathon.  The aim was to, in teams, create something that would enhance someone’s well-being.  A treasure trove of materials were available for the creation including wood, cardboard, textiles, air dry clay, LED lights and junk modelling materials.  The hall was filled with the buzz of excitement with parents and children sharing ideas and learning new skills along the way.  After 2 hours of frantic work the delightful inventions ranging from a back-pack lunch chair to an Uber dinosaur model were showcased and were taken away to be put to good use back at home.  Explore the wonderful creations below and we can’t wait for the next one!

Mandarin Mondays

We have been running stories from our beloved “Journey to the West” (西游记)series in our Mandarin Club. By now, we all know Monkey King has saved his master, the Tang Monk, many many times so he is really a hero. But, before he met Master Tang, was he always such a “good boy”? Has he ever been naughty? On this coming Monday, 11 March, we will share a story of Monkey King being quite mischievous.

Community Choir

If you are interested in joining our community choir, we rehearse on Thursdays at 3pm and 7pm in the Music Room, starting March 21.

This is open to all parents of BHS students, ex-parents of BHS and to BHS Staff. Our next performance will be at the International Food Fair. No auditions or previous singing experience – just lots of enthusiasm needed!

For existing members, click HERE for the audio files.

Book Drive

Brody, Ryan and Muchan in Year 6 are organising a Book Drive to help spread our love of reading.  The Sony Corporation will collect books to create mobile libraries in South Africa for schools that do not have enough books for children to read.  If you have books that are:

  1. Written in English language
  2. Suitable for 6-12 years old
  3. Pages should not be yellow or brown (due to aging)
  4. No missing or torn pages
  5. No scribbling on the pages
  6. No textbooks
  7. No magazines
  8. No encyclopedias

Please send them to school.  There will be a collection box in the school foyer from Monday 21st January. Any books you can donate will help spread the enjoyment of reading.

Parenting Your Child with ADHD or SLD
A toolkit you can use today

Parenting is hard… for anyone!  But when you have a child with learning differences or a passionate temperament, your job becomes even more difficult.  No one technique works for all; you need a toolkit, especially for those moments when stress is high and tolerance is low.  Dr. Amanda Oswalt Visher will lead an interactive discussion exploring practical tips and strategies parents can use to make life at home a bit smoother.

Join us to share your experiences and to learn from others what works (and what doesn’t) on the journey to supporting and encouraging your child or teen with ADHD and/or SLD.

Discussion themes:

  • How do I support my child’s homework routines?
  • How do I help my child get up and get ready on time?
  • How do I manage tantrums?
  • How do I know if my child is anxious or depressed?
  • How do I increase the fun and decrease the drama?

This Roundtable is appropriate for parents of school aged children and adolescents. Educators are welcome.

Parents value the support and connections that FOCUS roundtables provide in the sometimes-difficult journey of raising a child with learning differences in Hong Kong.

This is a great chance to hear from expert in the field, share your own experiences with other parents, talk about support strategies, and explore your personal questions in greater depth.

Mixed Basketball Tournament at RCHK

On Friday 1st March, Rachel, Kaeli, Sasha, Andy, Henry, Brody, Adrian and Muchan participated in the Mixed Basketball Tournament at RCHK. Schools were split into two groups: Kowloon and Island schools, with the top two teams from each group playing against each other for the championship. The team started out very strong, with baskets scored by Henry and Rachel, and got their first win 10-5 against RCHK. They then won against DC 10-4, with baskets scored by Adrian, Rachel, Muchan and Brody. The winning streak continued for their next two games, 6-3 against SJS and 12-1 against Harrow, with baskets scored by Henry, Rachel, Andy and Muchan. Such success also came about because of great communication and amazing defense by Kaeli and Sasha throughout. The last game of the round was against KJS, it was a very close game but BHS lost 6-7.

BHS

At the end of the round, BHS tied in first place with RCHK and KJS. So it came down to differential points between baskets scored for and against each school across all games. As a result, BHS became the runner up amongst the Kowloon schools. We played two more games, against Kennedy school, which they lost, and against DBIS, which they won. BHS came in third overall in the entire tournament.

Kowloon Cross Country Championships

Well done to all the runners who represented the school in the first ever Kowloon Cross Country Championships. We had 47 runners who all tried their best. Overall the school finished 4th out of 9 teams which is a fantastic result. We also finished 2nd overall in the Girls Under 9 team and third in the Under 8 Boys team and Under 10 Boys team. Arthur finished 4th in the Under 10 Boys race which was our best individual result. Thanks to the parents who helped on the day and thanks to Mr Thompson for being a marshall.
