Dear Parents,

BHS

Green Book Week

BHS has been a hive of activity this week in celebrating our Green Book Week.  We have had character dress ups, an illustrator visit, book swaps and quizzes as well as some wonderful classroom door displays.  Well done to all the students who have actively participated in the various events and our Environment and English Teams for setting up such a memorable week for us all.

1W Class Assembly

Well done to the students in 1W who performed their first class assembly to the school and parents.  They confidently shared their learning about their understanding of history through, poetry, dance, drama and model building.  It was clearly evident how much they enjoyed learning about their own history and that of others.  Congratulations to the students and adults who worked with them.

WellBeing Focus

BEACON HILL SCHOOL & HANDSON HONG KONG

Beacon Hill School is on a mission to raise essential hygiene items to support Hong Kong’s homeless community! Estimates suggest there are 2,000 homeless individuals living on Hong Kong’s street. Staple hygiene and medical items are in high demand amongst this group and vitally important for their health.

BHS

Our school community is joining forces with the charity HandsOn Hong Kong to raise these important items which will be sorted, packed and delivered to the city’s homeless as part of the city’s community service week, Serve-a-thon (May 4 – 12)! The items will be delivered through Kindness Walks with ImpactHK.

BHS

We are asking children in each year group to support by bringing in just one of the items as listed below:

Year 1 – Hand sanitizer / sterile wipes

Year 2 – Pack of band-aids (plasters)

Year 3 – Toothbrush and toothpaste

Year 4 – Small toiletry bag or pouch

Year 5 & 6 – Adult sized t-shirt for upcycling into donation bags—fine to be pre-used but clean (150 pieces needed)

BHS

On the morning of Saturday May 4th volunteers from across ESF and Hong Kong will come together to pack these and other items at a Family Volunteering Festival, to celebrate the launch of Serve-a-thon. This volunteer activity will support children from low-income and asylum seeking families, under-privileged elderly and the city’s homeless through a special morning of sorting, packing, gift-card creation and the making of recycled bags and mats for the homeless—all in support of the local community!

BHS

Be part of the action—sign up here to volunteer on May 4th. Children aged 5+ are welcome with an adult. You’ll need to create a HandsOn volunteer profile here before signing your family up.

Student Achievement

March 24 – Cassy Wu (4W) participated the “All Hong Kong Inter-Primary School Fencing Competition 2018-2019” as an Epee player. This is her first time participating the competition with students from Year 3 to Year 7. Although she didn’t get an award, it is a very good experience for her. Great effort Cassy!

BHS

March 24 – Sin Lam Yeung (4W) took part in a dressage competition (Lead Rein Test) at HK Jockey Club Beas River Equestrian Center. She had put lots of effort in practising and memorising the movements. At the test, she performed well with the pony named Pippi and was ranked first. She was very happy when she was presented the red rosette by the judge. Well done Sin Lam!

BHS

March 25 – Nathelie Yau (6H) participated in a musical production “Beauty and the Beast” during the summer. She has achieved a Distinction in Trinity Musical Theatre in Production Grade 7 Award. And now the Production is shortlisted for the National Title of 2019. Her next challenge is just around the corner! She is now part of a cast for the musical “Singin’in the Rain JR” which will be performed in August. Go Nathelie!

BHS

March 25 – Alfie LO (2D) got 83 mark in both Piano Solo Grade One and Cello Solo Junior in 71st Hong Kong School Schools Music Festival. It was the first time he participated in Hong Kong School Music Festival. He practices piano and cello everyday for almost an hour. He tried his best to compete against many elder and more experienced competitors and attained merits in both competitions. Well done Alfie!

BHS

March 25 – Enoch Wai (5C) participated in the 71st HK Schools Music Festival. He competed in the Graded Piano Solo — Grade 5 competition. He would spend 30 minutes a day practising. Enoch had spent the night before worrying and hardly got any sleep at all! That didn’t help his nervousness in the morning. He did his best and managed to attain honours for his piece which resulted in him getting 1st place in the entire competition. Fantastic work Enoch!

March 27 – Abigail Ng (5D) participated in the 71st Hong Kong Schools Music Festival for the first time. She competed in the categories of vocal solo, piano and Descant Recorder Solo. Abby did very well – 85 marks in vocal solo and piano, which comes to a merit. And 2nd place overall for descant recorder! Well done Abby!

BHS

At BHS we value the importance of developing the ‘whole’ child and this means valuing their achievement and interests outside of school.  If your child has achieved something special, we would be happy to share that with the BHS community through this newsletter.  Please email details and a photograph to kannis.tsui@bhs.edu.hk

Action in the PYP at BHS

March 25 – Zach Lau (1W) has taken some cool action at home setting up his own book corner. What a great way to enjoy books! Well done Zach!

BHS

Thank you for all the great examples of Action that you are taking.  Action in the PYP is when students are inspired through their learning and their experiences to make a difference to their lives or the community connected to real life issues and opportunities.  We would like to celebrate our students taking action outside of school.

Please could you email examples to tsuik4@beaconhill.edu.hk, and they will share through our newsletter.

There are different types of Action.  Last time a description of how ‘participation’ is a form of action was given, below is an description of how advocacy is a form of action.

Mandarin Mondays

Next week on April 1st our Mandarin club activities will continue the story series of Monkey King. Previously, the Monkey King has been freed from Wuzi Mountain by his Master Tang Monk, who is the most important person in Monkey King’s life and in our story. In this section, they will meet another team member, a white dragon, who will transform to a horse as the Tang Monk’s ride and follow them all way on the journey. But as always there is a fight waiting for the Monkey King in this chapter as well!

ESF Mixed Basketball Tournament

On Thursday 28th March, Rachel, Andy, Henry, Kaeli, Sasha, Adrian, Brody and Shafay participated in the ESF Mixed Basketball Tournament. The team started out strong with their first game against Kennedy School’s B, winning 13-0, with five baskets scored by Rachel and a three-pointer from Andy. Everybody remained composed and focused on the games to win the next two games: 7-6 against Harrow International School and 6-0 against Quarry Bay School.

This allowed the team to advance to the quarterfinals. With the team working hard to support each other on court, they powered through to win their game against Bradbury School and went up against Kennedy School in the semi-finals. That was an extremely tight game and the team managed to keep it together for the win.

The finals of the tournament came down to Beacon Hill School and RCHK, with the win going to RCHK in the end. As a result, BHS came in second overall in the tournament and Rachel was selected as one of the star players.

Everyone should be very proud of their efforts to challenge themselves and support each other! A huge thank you to Mr Teahan for organising the tournament and for the parents for coming to support!

Health

Dear Parents,

BHS

We have two confirmed cases of Influenza. We feel it important to inform all our parents so that precautionary measures can be taken.

BHS

Influenza A is an acute illness of the respiratory tract caused by influenza viruses. It is usually more common in periods from January to March and from July to August in Hong Kong.

Clinical presentation may range from flu-like symptoms (e.g. fever above 38.8°C/102°F, cough, sore throat, muscle aches, dizziness and headache) to severe respiratory illness (e.g. chest infection). Eye infection (conjunctivitis) and gastrointestinal symptoms (e.g. nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea) have also been reported.

Seasonal influenza is usually self-limiting with recovery in 2 – 7 days. Cough is often severe and prolonged but fever and other symptoms generally resolve in 5 – 7 days. However, the incubation period is usually around 1 – 4 days.

Influenza viruses mainly spread through droplets when infected people cough, sneeze or throat discharges, saliva or after touching contaminated objects.

BHS

Management
  • Have adequate rest and drink plenty of water.
  • Refrain from work or attending class at school when having symptoms of influenza. Seek medical advice if symptoms persist or deteriorate.
  • Antibiotics which target bacterial infection but not viral infection will not cure influenza or make recovery faster.
  • Antiviral agents may reduce severity and duration of illness but must be used under doctor’s prescription.

BHS

Maintain good personal hygiene
  • Perform hand hygiene frequently, especially before touching the mouth, nose or eyes; after touching public installations such as handrails or door knobs; or when hands are contaminated by respiratory secretion after coughing or sneezing.
  • Wash hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, then dry with a disposable paper towel or hand dryer. Hand Sanitizer is an effective alternative.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with tissue paper when sneezing or coughing. Dispose of soiled tissues into a lidded rubbish bin, then wash hands thoroughly.
  • When having respiratory symptoms, wear a surgical mask, refrain from work or attending class at school, avoid going to crowded places and seek medical advice promptly. Please encourage the infected person not to share eating utensils.
  • Maintain good indoor ventilation. Avoid going to crowded or poorly ventilated public places.

BHS

Viral infections are very contagious; sending your child back to school before completely recovered will increase the risk of passing the virus on to others.

Therefore should you child show any symptoms of sickness, please keep your child at home and consult your family doctor if needed. Any child with a fever is required to stay home and additional 48 hours after the temperature has come down to normal (below 37.5°C/99.5°F) without medical treatment.

Chickenpox

We have a student who have been confirmed to have Chickenpox. I would ask that you keep a close eye on your child, checking for any signs of a rash. Sometimes other symptoms may start a day or two before the rash appears.

These can include:

  • feeling tired and generally unwell
  • a high temperature (fever) of 38C (100.4F) or over
  • feeling sick
  • a headache
  • aching, painful muscles
  • loss of appetite

Not everyone has these symptoms.

If in doubt please keep your child away from school and consult a doctor.
