ESF Primary Choral Concert 2019

Last Thursday evening, I along with several staff members attended the ESF Primary Choral Concert.  Over 660 children from across all ESF schools joined together in song.  It was a fantastic performance and the BHS students had a wonderful time performing.  Thank you so much to Mr Gibson, Miss Kannis and Mrs Blair for their commitment and dedication.

BHS Spring Concert

Nothing gets me into the Easter spirit like our annual Spring Concert with performances from our Junior Choir and Ukulele group.  The children delighted audiences with their singing!  Thank you to all the adults who have worked with the choirs and ukulele group and the PTA for sponsoring a wonderful afternoon tea for our audience!

Year 1 Sharing Day

This week the Year 1 children showed such confidence and creativity as they shared their learning from their latest inquiry into how evidence helps us understand people’s histories.  The children were able to articulate what they have learned about how to find out about the past and sang a wonderful song as a group to begin.  The parents then accompanied their child through various activities designed to show them their child’s growing knowledge and give the children a chance to be the expert! The parents were taught by the children to play a tune on the piano or xylophone, make simple clay coil decorations and to do the hand jive amongst other things.

BHS

While viewing the amazing artwork the children have created, conversations turned to the next part of the children’s recently completed timelines with the children thinking about what they want to do when they grow up.  If their predictions come true we will have ex- Beacon Hillers who are artists, explorers, dancers, filmmakers and many other exciting futures ahead. Well done to all the Year 1 students and the team of staff who have supported them.

Student Achievement

April 4 – Nathan Hau (4F) is officially a published author! He is an enthusiastic writer who thoroughly enjoys putting his extensive vocabulary to the test by writing at school and in his free time. Nathan is really interested in volcanoes and their impact (Year 4’s current U.O.I. focuses on how the Earth changes), particularly Mount Vesuvius and the preservation of Pompeii. He wrote a long piece on this topic which he submitted to “Posties” and they published it in their most recent issue! Fantastic work, Nathan, we really hope you enjoy your visit to Pompeii during the Easter break – we cannot wait to hear all about it!

BHS

April 5 – Henry Leung (1P) participated in the 2019 Hong Kong Sevens Mini & Youth Showcase Tournament in the under 6 age group. He had so much fun running under the sun and received a medal for his participation. It’s the first time he got a wood medal (to keep rugby green). Henry enjoys weekly training and took part at 6 competitions in the past 8 months. He tried his best at every game. Through rugby, he made new friends, learned to play as a team and cheer for his teammates. Keep it up Henry!

BHS

April 7 – Zedric Wong (5C) participated in the 2019 City League under division SD10AA alongside his teammates. The league is a year-long competition which requires dedication and hard work from every member and he feels honoured to be able to contribute and be a part of this team. All that hard work paid off in the end! His team won the championship! Well done Zedric!

BHS

April 7 – Summer Wong (2D) participated in the 2019 City League under division SD8AA organized by Hong Kong Typhoon. His team won the championship! Well done Summer!

BHS

April 7 – Jamie Loynd (2F) recently participated in the Sandy Bay Mini Rugby Tournament. Jamie plays for the SCAA Causeway Bay Under-7’s team. Jamie has been playing Rugby for a few years now and is a confident ball handler, charging up field when the ball is passed to him; but most of all, Jamie enjoys playing with his teammates the most, no matter win or lose! Great effort Jamie!

BHS

April 7 – Karl Loynd (6H) recently participated in the KCC Hockey Tournament. Karl is the goalkeeper of the KCC Under-10’s team. Although he has only been playing for a little over a year, Karl is now the starting goalkeeper for his team and he enjoys playing alongside his teammates. Keep going Karl!

BHS

April 7 – Ernest Chan (4W) participated a Tae Kwon Do sparring competition for the very first time.  He had two matches on that day, he won one match and lost the other one.  He had a brilliant time meeting some great competitors.  He has a tremendous passion for Tae Kwon Do and we are sure that he will keep practicing and be a more competitive player in the future.  Well done Ernest!

BHS

April 7 – Celine Razon (2K) took part in a Taekwondo blocking and movement exam at the Tsuen Wan Sports Centre. She’s very happy to have moved up, from having a yellow-green belt to being a green belter. Well done Celine!

BHS

April 11 – Coen Li (5C) participated in a piano competition 日本PIARA浜松鋼琴大賽香港區選拔賽 2019. He played ABRSM grade 8 song Nikolai Kapustin Sonatina and he is the youngest in the group. He managed to impress the judges and won first place! Well done Coen!

BHS

At BHS we value the importance of developing the ‘whole’ child and this means valuing their achievement and interests outside of school.  If your child has achieved something special, we would be happy to share that with the BHS community through this newsletter.  Please email details and a photograph to kannis.tsui@bhs.edu.hk

Action in the PYP at BHS

March 30 – Seraphina Chow (3G) and Sethiel Chow (1P)  joined a Braille Leather craft making workshop on organized by DIM START (原.點).  DIM START is a community organization aiming to promote public understanding of the visually impaired people, thereby promoting an integrated and mutual respect society.

The workshop included a sharing from a person with visual impairment, introduction of braille, and braille leather craft making.  Both Seraphina and Sethiel paid attention to the sharing and enjoyed the craft making time.  It was a good opportunity for both Seraphina and Sethiel to learn about mutual respect in the society. Well done to Seraphina and Sethiel!

BHS

April 7 – Jada Cheng (2F) participated in a Beach Clean Up activity. By collecting the beach trash, Jada hopes to help save the marine animals from swallowing the plastics in the sea which will endanger their lives and the ecosystem. She found a lot of plastic waste including bottles, cups, straws and even shoes on the beach which may end up be going into the sea carried by wind and rainfall. Fantastic job Jada!

BHS

April 9 – Shawn Lee (3M), Shanica Yiu (3M) and Chloe Lau (3M) were inspired to take action and produced these extra information books about the muscular and skeletal system.  The books are really informative demonstrating how knowledgeable they are. Great inquiring guys!

BHS

Action in the PYP is when students are inspired through their learning and their experiences to make a difference to their lives or the community connected to real life issues and opportunities.  We would like to celebrate our students taking action outside of school.

Please email examples to kannis.tsui@bhs.edu.hk, and they will share through our newsletter.

BHS

There are different types of Action.  Last time a description of how ‘participation’ is a form of action was given, below is an description of how advocacy is a form of action.

News from the English Team

Green Book Week

We had such a fun week at Beacon Hill celebrating both our love of books and our passion for making the world a greener place, you may have seen some of the photos on the school website and in the newsletter.  A huge thank you for all the support you have given your children in taking part in the competitions, organising books for the book swap and creating fantastic costumes for our dress up day. There was a range of extra activities on offer for the children to get involved in and many classes chose a picture book with an environmental theme to teach reading and writing through that week. Some classes decorated their doors to share some of their learning.  The children thoroughly enjoyed drawing along with Liz Million, a UK based children’s illustrator who visited school too. We are sure that they would have told you all about it!  Those children who won competitions were presented with prizes and certificates in our assembly on Friday. It was certainly tough to choose overall winners when everyone tried so hard- so well done all!

Our Beacon Hill Yearbook for 2018-2019 is about to be published and it is going to be a wonderful celebration and reflection of some of the events and activities that have happened during the last school year.  All of the children in the school are represented in the book in some way and there are plenty of colourful photographs so that you can hunt out familiar faces.  We know that people buy copies and enjoy looking back at their time at BHS in years to come.

The price of the book is HK$210.  There will be a limited number of copies printed so pre-ordering is recommended.  To order, please fill in the eNotice reply slip via The Gateway.

Orders must be received and paid for by Friday, 3rd May.

Yours sincerely,

Chad Pheasant
