Dear Parents,

BHS

Year 6 Exhibition

What an amazing day we had yesterday, witnessing the incredible learning journey of the Year 6s through their Exhibition unit.  The children delivered confident speeches and demonstrated the depth of their understanding in an area of personal interest.  The Year 6 exhibition saw the students develop as innovators, teachers, musicians, artists, performers, sports coaches and so much more.  I feel confident that the children will continue to approach their learning with a strong work ethic and perseverance as they continue to dream of the world they want to see in the future.  Well done Year 6s, you should all feel very proud of your achievements.  Thank you to the Year 6 team and the BHS staff who have acted as mentors to guide and support the students.

The day was made even more special by a special VIP, Mr Harrison.

The children were able to farewell Mr Harrison properly with an assembly today where they shared their favourite memories of Mr Harrison.  We will miss Mr Harrison but wish him all the very best on the next chapter of his life.

Wellbeing Focus

A Thank You Message from Hands On Hong Kong.

Volunteers of all ages from across the ESF community came together to celebrate the start of Hong Kong’s community service week, Serve-a-thon, this past weekend! Organised by HandsOn Hong Kong, this Family Volunteering Festival at Kennedy School brought together 150 volunteers to spend their morning packing necessity items for 400 individuals in need. These necessity items for Hong Kong’s impoverished elderly, homeless and children from low-income families were raised by Kennedy School, Beacon Hill School and the Peak School. The littlest volunteers put so much care and thought into making and decorating beautiful hand-made gift cards and recycled bags for distributing these items—and the families on the Kindness Mat making station refused to stop until all mats for the homeless were finished! This event was made possible with the support of the English Schools Foundation.

Health & Safety

If your child is unable to attend school due to illness, or for any other reason, it is important that the school is notified on the first day of his/her absence so they can be marked accordingly on the register.  Parents/carers may be contacted if a child is absent without explanation, especially if there are a number of unexplained absences in one class.

Scarlett got 1st runner up on Surprise Pre Alpha & the winner on Solo Competition Pre Alpha. Well done Scarlett!

The purposes of him participating in this race are challenge himself, overcome his fear swimming in the sea and complete the race.  He did it without any special training or having any clubs to back him up.  He was so brave to complete the race in such as bad weather and he enjoys the race so much!  Well done Ernest!

At BHS we value the importance of developing the ‘whole’ child and this means valuing their achievement and interests outside of school.  If your child has achieved something special, we would be happy to share that with the BHS community through this newsletter.  Please email details and a photograph to kannis.tsui@bhs.edu.hk

Action in the PYP at BHS

Action in the PYP is when students are inspired through their learning and their experiences to make a difference to their lives or the community connected to real life issues and opportunities.  We would like to celebrate our students taking action outside of school.

Please email examples to kannis.tsui@bhs.edu.hk, and they will share through our newsletter.

BHS

There are different types of Action.  Last time a description of how ‘participation’ is a form of action was given, below is an description of how advocacy is a form of action.

Battle of the Books

May 2 – Our Year 6 Battle of the Books team competed in the annual Battle of the Books Tournament at Shatin Junior School. The Battle of the Books competition is designed to introduce students to a variety of reading materials, build teamwork skills, and promote a love of reading.

Since August, our Battle of the Books team have been reading and enjoying 20 books and have been working as a team to answer questions about each title. The children’s skills of cooperation, collaboration and team spirit have been impressive throughout.

We are incredibly proud of each and every member of the team who participated in the lead up to the competition and the tournament itself. Well done to our BHS BOB team!

Mandarin Club

Mandarin Club will resume on Monday, 6th May. We hope to see many of you there. We will continue with stories from our beloved “Journey to the West” (西游记)series in our Mandarin Club. We know most of you love Monkey King, but there are other very interesting characters in the book. This time, we will share a story about the Piggie (猪八戒). While he may not be as heroic or brave or powerful as Monkey King, he is surely a very funny and storied character. Was he born a pig? If not, how did he become one? How did he meet the Tang Monk and Monkey King? And why did he join their journey?

Community Choir

If you are interested in joining our community choir, we rehearse on Thursdays at 3pm and 7pm in the Music Room.

This is open to all parents of BHS students, ex-parents of BHS and to BHS Staff. Our next performance will be at the Summer Concert. No auditions or previous singing experience – just lots of enthusiasm needed!

For existing members, click HERE for the audio files.
