Dear Parents,

It was lovely to welcome our prospective Year 1 students to school this week for their second induction visit. The students were very excited to be here and it was great to meet them all again. Ms Emily Jeves has been leading the induction process for parents this term and ensuring the transition from kindergarten to primary school is a smooth process. We look forward to August when the new Year 1s will join BHS along with their families.

On Tuesday, a group of 14 dancers took part in the 3rd ESF Celebration of Dance.  The performances were based around the themes of breaking ‘glass ceilings’ and challenging stereotypes.  The students put on an energetic and confident performance.  Well done to all the students and thank you to Mr Teahan, Ms Jeves and Miss Kannis for supporting the students.

Fortunately our students and our school bus service has not been impacted by the traffic disruption in Admiralty/Central this week.  We are aware that another protest may be planned for Sunday.  Please do inform the school if you believe your child’s journey to or from school will be affected.

Student Achievement

June 1 – Justin Ting (1W) participated in the Spartan Race with his friends. He was very brave to challenge himself and tackle all the obstacles though there was a lot running, climbing, jumping and muddy-ness! Justin enjoyed it very much & gained a huge amount of confidence and courage from participating. Well done Justin!

BHS

June 1 –  Donovan Yim (6H) made his debut in the Junior Tennis Tour organised by Asia Tennis Federation in Delhi, India.  There were 158 players joining the competition.  Don is among the youngest boys at 10 playing against most opponents at the age of 11 to 14.  He managed to fight in the main draw of both 14 and under boys singles and doubles.  The weather was a very hot 42 degree Celsius which was a big test for Donovan playing most matches at 11 to 13:00 with extreme heat.  He continued to improve throughout the tournament with the final match barely lost at 2:4, 4:0 and 1:4.  A great experience for him to play against the top level junior boys in Asia with this tour.

BHS

June 8 – Raina Law (1P) participated in ESF 15th Gymnastics Tournament. She won the champion of vault and 2nd runner-up of handstand. Raina has shown great courage and looks forward to having the next tournament again. Well done Raina!

BHS

June 8 – Kingsley Chan (1P) prepared a Father’s Day present for his father by baking a Father’s Day cake for him! Kingsley has always been a cooking lover and this year he decided to express his love for his father via something he’s very fond of and good at doing – cooking. The cake looked good and tasted great as well. The entire family enjoyed the cake so much. Good job Kingsley!

BHS

June 8 – Fae Chui (4A) participated in the “15th Annual ESF Gymnastics Tournament 2019” held in South Island School. She challenged Level 9 (All ages) and was very happy to finish with a 3rd place on balance beam. Well done Fae!

BHS

June 8 – Hailey Lee (1L) had participated in the ESF gymnastics tournament. Hailey practices gymnastics for a year and this was the first time that she took part in the tournament. With her courage and effort, she achieved 4 medals (2 silvers and 2 bronzes). Excellent work Hailey!

BHS

June 9 – Hena Yang(6D) participated in the Sportscene Gymnastics International Competition Cum 2019 held in Hong Kong. June 10 – Charlotte Wan (4A) had a wonderful experience participating in the Festival Week at Hong Kong School of Performing Arts. Charlotte played a character, the Blue Fairy, and she sang the song “When You Wish Upon A Star” and welcomed the audience to Italy where the show was set.  Her character also reminded Geppetto, that his wooden puppet will become a real boy if the puppet proves himself to be brave, truthful and unselfish. And also gave Pinocchio a conscience with Jiminy Cricket whom guided him down the straight and narrow path. Well done Charlotte!

BHS

June 11 – Chloe Wong (5F) got her Black Belt in Tae Kwon Doe. Fantastic Chloe!

At BHS we value the importance of developing the ‘whole’ child and this means valuing their achievement and interests outside of school.  If your child has achieved something special, we would be happy to share that with the BHS community through this newsletter.  Please email details and a photograph to kannis.tsui@bhs.edu.hk

Action in the PYP at BHS

June 10 – Henry Leung (1P) participated in a Tree Partner Eco-Adventure Programme organized by the World Green Organization recently. He had a fun and productive morning at Sai Kung West Country Park. Through tree planting activity, he learned the importance of preserving green space in our city and how to care the native trees. He chose 9 seedlings with higher ecological value and planted them on hillside. He hoped these plants will grow strong and provide a healthier home for the wildlife.

BHS

Action in the PYP is when students are inspired through their learning and their experiences to make a difference to their lives or the community connected to real life issues and opportunities.  We would like to celebrate our students taking action outside of school.

Please email examples to kannis.tsui@bhs.edu.hk, and they will share through our newsletter.

BHS

There are different types of Action.  Last time a description of how ‘participation’ is a form of action was given, below is an description of how advocacy is a form of action.

Transition Band

June 10 –  British rock band Transition performed at BHS as part of their three-day school tour in Hong Kong. They have been writing songs in Mandarin and performing them in many parts of Asia including Taiwan and mainland China. Students in Year Four, Year Five and Year Six had a fantastic time joining in the singing and interacting with the band in Mandarin. A truly wonderful and fun-filled afternoon!

Mandarin Club

Many of the students expressed strong interest in Chinese songs during the latest Mandarin Club. It seems that we have quite a lot of musical larks. Therefore, we have decided to have some fun this coming Monday. We will play videos and sing together some popular Chinese songs. Guess what will be our headline piece? I am sure most of you love it and can sing from your heart. It is the famous “对不起,我的中文不好” from the band Transition! So, come join us and let the show begin!

Aquathon HKPSSA

June 8 – Well done to the aquathon team who competed in the HKPSAA Aquathon on Saturday. The aquathon event involved a 250m swim followed by a 1km run. All the team members put in a massive effort and should be proud of themselves. The A team finished 15th and the B team 23rd overall (out of 29 teams). Our best individual result was Rachel who finished as the second fastest (and third overall) in her heat. Well done to all the team and thanks to the wonderful parental support on the day. Also, thanks to Miss Chung for being a volunteer marshall and Miss King for her coaching.

ESF Fun Aquathon

June 10 – Well done to the Aquathon club who competed in the final competition of the year on Monday – the ESF Fun Aquathon. As this was the same course as Saturday we had had experience of the course and event and this helped improve our performances. Once again the club members should be very proud of their achievements during this club. Miss King and I have seen major improvements and members of the club challenge themselves to get better. Highlights of the day were both Rachel and Nathelie winning their heats. Thanks to Miss King for coaching the team and the parents (and ex-students) who supported us on the day. As this was our last event all tri-suits will need to be returned to school by Monday.
