Dear Parents,

This week, our CEO, Mrs. Belinda Greer, visited BHS.  She met with some of our teachers and popped into a few classrooms.  She was impressed by the independence and attitude of our Year 6s who were busily getting themselves organised to start the day as well as the friendliness of all our students and staff.

A huge well done to 5F who shared with us their Class Assembly this morning.  In just the short time they have been in Year 5 and inquiring into their Central Idea ‘Artists can use a process to express messages and ideas’, they have demonstrated their creativity and imagination through Dance, Drama and Art.

Our Year 3s also completed their online InCAS assessments this week.  Results will be made available to parents in October and teachers will discuss these at the Parent Teacher Consultations later in the term.

A reminder to please complete the survey so that we can prioritise our Wellbeing workshops for parents and helpers based on interest. Click here for survey.

BHS House Captains

Last week, we held our second round of House Captain presentations for those children who want to take a leadership role and represent their house.  Each House is represented by two House Captains from Year 6.  Students from Year 5 & 6 were invited to listen to their speeches and place a vote.

The following students must be commended for their courage, confidence and creativity in delivering some powerful speeches.

Diversity – Bosco, Cameron, Ember, Karen, Katelyn & Muchan

Confidence – Andrew, Hena, Lara, Madelyn, Ryan, Sera, Timothy & Yvaine

Happiness – Crystal, Leanna, Shafay, Sofie, Sophie & Zyrus

Inclusivity – Brody, Garnet, Isabel, Jannat, Koemi, Lianna & Ricci

The final votes were counted and our House Captains were announced in Golden Book Assembly on Monday.

Congratulations to our 2018-19 BHS House Captains:

Diversity – Katelyn Ma & Muchan Kim

Confidence – Hena Yang & Ryan Schroeder

Happiness -Crystal Wong & Shafay Khan

Inclusivity – Brody Roessel & Garnet Lau

We look forward to the House Captains’ leadership of their houses and carrying out additional responsibilities throughout the year.

Uniform Reminder

Thank you for your continued attention to your child’s presentation for school. Beacon Hill School students proudly wear their uniform. This is an expectation. It is always pleasing to see the students so well presented in their uniform as it fosters an ethos of high standards in our school community.   Please can I remind you that children should wear ALL BLACK shoes with their school uniform and ALL WHITE trainers with their P.E. Kit.

Wellbeing Focus

This week’s assembly focus has been on how we can be more inclusive of others at BHS.  Mr Pheasant asked us all to:

Take Notice – Help the children become more aware of their surroundings and people in their community.

Connect –  Children can connect with their friends and make new friends by understanding and respecting differences.

Give – Children can give their time to help others feel more included.

Mr Pheasant shared the story ‘The Very Cranky Bear’ by Nick Bland.  This can be borrowed from the school library if you would like to read this with your child.

Encourage your child to value and see themselves as a unique and worthwhile person, and that others are too. Remind them that a person’s appearance, personality, quirks, beliefs and interests bring something special to the world. If your child recognises that everyone has strengths and something to offer, they will be less likely to reject and exclude others.  Being DIFFERENT is what makes each one of us the SAME.

Wellbeing Survey

Next week the children in Years 4-6 will fill in an online questionnaire assessing their wellbeing at school. This is happening across ESF with all students in Years 4-13. The Assessing Wellbeing in Education (AWE) assessment will help schools to measure and track the wellbeing of their school community through Positive Education based online wellbeing assessments.

The AWE assessment consists of a collection of validated psychometric scales and scientifically informed questions from the psychology literature that assess various aspects of wellbeing. The AWE assessment covers all major theories of wellbeing, rather than one particular theory or perspective.

The school will receive data about each student’s wellbeing, and also anonymised data related to classes, year groups and the whole school. This will help the school plan to help both individuals and inform whole school plans.

Further information is available at www.awesomeschools.com Please get in touch with Susan Chung if you would like to discuss this further.

Mobile Phones & Smart Watches

We do understand that parents of children who travel to and from school on their own, may want their child to be able to contact them. However, it is important that children with mobile phones ensure they are switched off as they come onto the school grounds. They should not be used in school, this includes on the playground in the mornings and after school. The same applies to any watches with a phone function.  Parents who have children who bring mobile phones or smart watches into school, should remind their children of these rules.

Student Achievement

Congratulations to Karsten Tsang for winning the”Father & Mother I Love You” Hong Kong Children T-Shirt Drawing Competition,  which was organized by the Hong Kong Children Art & Speech Association this summer.

At BHS we value the importance of developing the ‘whole’ child and this means valuing their achievement and interests outside of school.  If your child has achieved something special, we would be happy to share that with the BHS community through this newsletter.  Please email details and a photograph to kannis.tsui@bhs.edu.hk

SEN Sensory Club

The SEN teachers- led by Ms Barr, have turned the downstairs FMS room into a sensory room and have been hosting a morning sensory club. The children have loved coming and trying the different sensory activities on offer including a new swing, ball pits, play doh, putty, yoga balls and climbing through tunnels. The early morning sensory stimulation has not only been fun but helped to assist some of our students to have a calm start to the day.

We love The OT Toolbox for getting new ideas for how to enhance fine motor and gross motor skills in our learners. There are lots of fun ideas that you can also try at home.  www.theottoolbox.com
