Dear Parents,

This week, we had another visitor from ESF Centre, Mr. Adam Hughes our Director of Education.  Over the course of the year, Adam will be visiting our students and supporting the developments at BHS.

3W Class Assembly

Thank you to 3W for a great celebration of their new start in Year 3.  They confidently shared their worries and showed us how we can turn our red thoughts into green thoughts, with a little help from an amazing robot!  3W also explained some strategies that a ‘Calm Down Hero’ uses such as wriggling our ten fingers, blowing air, reaching high and touching the floor.

Wellbeing Focus

This week one of our Inclusivity House Captains, Brody Roessel shared with us how he looks after his well-being because he CONNECTS.  He says he does this through Acting.  Brody said it was important as an actor to connect with fellow cast members and make a connection with the audience.

When children are interested, curious and engaged in an activity, their brain is making new connections.  As adults, we need to discover what excites and interests children.  What do they become fascinated by?  How can we support them in exploring these interests?

Health & Safety

Child Protection and Safeguarding at BHS

BHS is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of our children. The school expects all staff, volunteers, students and visitors to share and uphold this commitment. If a child cannot feel safe, they cannot learn to their full potential.  At BHS, all visitors and volunteers working with students, by signing into the school, are agreeing to follow the guidelines for Safeguarding as stated in this booklet.

Mandarin Mondays

At BHS, we are very fortunate to have a supportive community.  We have a small group of parents who run the Mandarin Mondays Story time in the Learning Centre to encourage the enjoyment of Mandarin through stories.  Next week, the focus will be on Mid-Autumn Festival:

Mid-autumn Festival is coming! We are holding a special session about Mid-autumn Festival in Monday’s Mandarin club. Do you know why we celebrate this Holiday? Do you want to know the story of a beautiful fairy who lives on the moon? Do you want to play some interesting riddles about Mid-autumn? Then come to our Mandarin club and have some fun! We will tell stories about a fairy named Chang’er during the Lower Primary session and play some riddles during the Upper Primary session. We have prizes for those who find the right answer to the riddles!

Our new and improved Beacon Hill School app is now available to download.  Mr Lowe has developed the app which is more user-friendly.  You will be able to view school events in the calendar and keep up to date with the latest newsletter and weekly updates. More details below.

Student Achievement

At BHS we value the importance of developing the ‘whole’ child and this means valuing their achievement and interests outside of school.  If your child has achieved something special, we would be happy to share that with the BHS community through this newsletter.  Please email details and a photograph to kannis.tsui@bhs.edu.hk

Chickenpox (or Suspected)

We would like to inform you of the fact that one student is on sick leave with Suspected Chickenpox.  The child is resting at home and will resume school as per doctor’s advice.

Chickenpox is very contagious.

The signs and symptoms include a low-grade fever, a skin rash on the scalp and body (mainly the trunk).  The vesicles are itchy.

If you suspect that your child has Chickenpox, please consult the doctor for confirmation of diagnosis and if confirmed with Chickenpox (or Suspected), please could you inform the school via e-mail.

Also, please closely monitor other children in the household.

Fever
Reminder (from the Centre for Health Protection, the Department of Health)

“ To prevent outbreaks of influenza and other respiratory infections, it is of prime importance that children with fever (oral temperature higher than 37.5°C, or ear temperature higher than 38°C), regardless of the presence of respiratory symptom, should not be allowed to attend school.  They should be advised to seek medical advice and should avoid school till 48 hours after the fever has subsided”.

Always Keep Hands Clean.

Thank you.
