Dear Parents, Caregivers and Students

Parent Consultations

Thanks to those of you who attended parent consultations last night and to those families who have rescheduled to meet teachers at an alternative time due to postponements last week.  We appreciate and value your partnership.

CPD Day on Monday

Staff attended an ESF CPD day last Monday.  Staff across ESF schools shared best practice with colleagues through workshops and practical hands-on sessions.  It was an excellent celebration of learning and offered great take-aways to try and use upon returning to school.  Thanks to our staff; Samantha Saxena, Stu Lowe, Haymen Mak and Andy Thompson who facilitated sessions on the day.

Dress Casual for Community Chest – This Friday

On Friday 4th October our school will be encouraged to ‘Dress Casual’ and support the Community Chest by donating money to this fund. The HK Community Chest does great work in the community and supports a number of charities to make a difference to people’s lives. To find out more about what they do, click here.  Students can make donations of $10-20

Parenting During Troubled Times

When a community is experiencing difficult times parents/guardians need to be aware of the possible impacts this could have on students’ learning, behaviour and relationships. Our colleagues at Renaissance College have put together this helpful document for parents.

Kind regards,

Brenda Cook
Principal

Dear Parents / Guardians,

We noted that in 2018/19 winter influenza season, a number of school outbreaks of influenza-like illness were recorded. The majority happened in kindergarten and primary settings.

As Seasonal Influenza Vaccination (SIV) is effective in preventing seasonal influenza and its complications, SIV is recommended for children 6 months to 11 years for reducing influenza’s symptoms and related complications.

The Government will be implementing a Vaccination Subsidy Scheme (VSS) this year, which provides a HK$210 subsidy, per dose. (Only for Hong Kong resident AND between the age of 6 months to 12 years old or above but attending a primary school in HK). Parents may choose to join this flu shot system.  This will not take place at school

Please read the above information from CHP for further information. If you have additional enquiries, do not hesitate to contact me.

Thank you.

Yours faithfully,

Action in the PYP is when students are inspired through their learning and their experiences to make a difference to their lives or the community connected to real life issues and opportunities.  We would like to celebrate our students taking action outside of school. If your child has taken any action, we would be happy to share that with the BHS community through this newsletter and through our Facebook page.  Please email details and a photograph to kannis.tsui@bhs.edu.hk

At BHS we value the importance of developing the ‘whole’ child and this means valuing their achievement and interests outside of school.  If your child has achieved something special, we would be happy to share that with the BHS community through this newsletter and through our Facebook page.  Please email details and a photograph to kannis.tsui@bhs.edu.hk

September 21 – Gavin Lo (4F) participated in the “Audition Round” of Singh Kart Cup 2019 by Kimi Raikkonen held in Impact Speed Park Bangkok. He tackled the rain and challenged other promising children on the track for speed. In fact, the class of go-kart that he races with (Cadet 2-stroke engine) have a top speed of 85 miles/hour. There was plenty of speed and skill that was shown on the track so it was a tough call for the judging panel to pick who was going to go through. Gavin tried his very best, especially driving in the rain. He felt really great afterwards and is now waiting for the results. Good luck Gavin!

September 22 – Trevor Tsang (5W) has successfully completed the Potential Taekwondo Hong Kong Association’s Taekwondo Promotion test- Poom 1.  The Poom is substituted for a Black Belt adult rank when the recipient has met all the requirements of the adult degree, but has not reached the age of maturity, usually 15 and older. Trevor has started Taekwondo weekly training since kindergarten.  After 5 years of training, he passed the Black Belt assessment after doing 10 self-defense and 8 breaking board methods. In order to break the boards, he used a punch and the knife hand; as well as a turning kick, a side kick, a back kick, a hook kick, a jump high kick and a jump side kick. Trevor got As for his jump high kick and knife hand, and Bs for the other items.  He is happy to complete his goal in Taekwondo. Well done Trevor!

October 1 – Jayla Chung (5W) participated in the swimming competition (age 9-10 25m freestyle) which was organised by TRISWIM. She managed to earn 2nd runner up in the competition. Throughout the training, it helped her to build up confidence and resilience. Keep going Jayla!

October 1 – Ryan Yip (3D) participated in the 2019 Trim-swim competition held at Australian International School. He competed in the 25m back stroke event in the 2011-2012 age group and came out as the winner! He practices swimming regularly and he is very happy that his efforts pay off. Congratulations Ryan!
