Dear Parents,

This is my final Newsletter of this academic year. What a very busy and successful year this has been for Beacon Hill School. We finished today with a whole school assembly where we looked back on some of the activities and events that have taken place during the year. It is only when you stop and take time to reflect that you realise just how much happens at Beacon Hill – and so much is above and beyond ‘the call of duty’!

Farewells

As usual at this time of the school year we say farewell to people. Firstly we wish all of our Year 6 students well for their transfer to secondary school. On Wednesday evening they really showed how well they can work as a team, coming together to create a spectacular production of ‘Mulan’. This really showed how they have grown in the few years since they have been at BHS. They have been a terrific group of students and we are confident they will go on to great things in the future. We look forward to them coming back to visit us to share how they’re loving their new schools.

We have some other students from other year groups who are leaving us:

Amelie, Julien and Hailey Walle, Serene Wong, Kurtis Tsui, Rachel Pei, Tin Long So, Agnes Robinson, Gabby Moore, Rachel Lam, Nikhil Bezwada, Katelyn Byatt, Sippy Dakshana, Mathieu Pin Harry and Delna Khan. Some of these children are moving to different schools in Hong Kong whilst others are moving overseas. Wherever they may be going we wish them and their families well – keep in touch.

A few staff members are also leaving Beacon Hill this year. We say a temporary thank you and goodbye to Jasmine Yeung who has been working with us as a part-time parent funded EA.  Her work has been invaluable. She will be joining us in August as a full-time EA which is great news! Two other EAs will be leaving us this year, both of whom are going on to start their own teaching careers. Sarah Sanderson and Cassie Chan have both recently achieved qualified teacher status. Sarah has secured a teaching position in Malaysia and Cassie is looking to start her teaching career here in Hong Kong. It is great to know that through their work in Beacon Hill they have both set their hearts on the profession of teaching. Good luck to both of them.

We are very sad to have to say goodbye to four of our teachers. Two of them have already been away on extended maternity leave but now it is time to say an official goodbye to Frances Burley and Sarah Westmacott. Frances has decided she would like to spend more time at home with her family and Sarah has secured a part-time position at Kennedy School which allows her to spend more time with her family too. Both are fantastic teachers whom we have been fortunate enough to have had working with us. We will miss them enormously. After two years in Hong Kong, Hannah Woollard has somewhat reluctantly decided to return to the UK. She has been a marvellous addition to the BHS team and will be sorely missed. Finally, Rudi Dray will be leaving us after securing a promoted position at Kennedy School. Rudi is a wonderful ‘team player’ who has made a great contribution to Beacon Hill. We wish him and all of our leavers all the very best for the future. Remember, as Mr Brewster once said, ‘Once a Beacon Hiller, always a Beacon Hiller’. Keep in touch.

Other Staffing Updates

I am very excited to announce that Ms Jane Trotter will be getting married in the summer holiday. We wish her and Tomi well for their celebrations and look forward to welcoming her back in August as Mrs Jane Farago.

Mrs Marie-Claire Mulligan is expecting a baby any time soon and has been on leave recently. She will take extended maternity leave at the start of the new academic year and we look forward to welcoming her back later in the school year. Best wishes to her and her family.

Returning to Beacon Hill in August will be Mrs Helen Pickering and Ms Laura Fisher who have both been on extended maternity leave. We are also very happy to have Mr Stuart Lowe rejoining us (some of you may remember him from when he taught at BHS). He will have a dual role as an ‘embedded ESF advisor’ – teaching Learning Technology at BHS whilst maintaining his current role as ESF Learning Technology Advisor for Primary schools. We are very excited to welcome them all back.

On behalf of all the staff, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all of you for being an incredible support to Beacon Hill School. The partnership we have with parents is key to the success our children have. I hope you are all able to share some quality time together with your families during the summer holiday. I will spend much of the time in Hong Kong with my brother and family visiting, but will also visit the UK for a family wedding. Please stay safe wherever you may travel and whatever you may do. We look forward to seeing many of you again at the start of the new term.

Best wishes and happy holidays,

James Harrison

Gaelic Football

On Wednesday 17th June two teams from Beacon Hill played in a gaelic football tournament. Gaelic football combines the skills of rugby, basketball and football into one sport. The teams had been training with a coach from Ireland!

The Year Sixes played six matches winning three and losing three. Our wins were against FIS A (8-1), Kennedy (5-0) and FIS B (13-0). We lost to DBIS (0-9), Harrow Blue (4-6) and Harrow Yellow (0-7). Sunny was chosen as player of the tournament for Beacon Hill School.

The Year Fives finished second overall and won four matches and only lost one. Their most exciting game was against Kowloon Junior where they were losing 3-6 with one minute to go and then scored two goals in quick succession to win 9-6! Their results were FIS 1 (9-0), Kennedy (10-8), Kowloon Junior (9-6), FIS 2 (15-2) and Harrow (0-3). Mikail was chosen as player of the tournament for the Fives.

Thanks to Mrs Angel for helping coach the teams and Miss Wong (Anakin’s Mum) for supervising the Year 5s at the tournament.

On Sunday 21st the Year 5s and 6s combined to form one team to play in another tournament in Discovery Bay. Results were not kept as it was just another opportunity to experience playing gaelic. The team were able to experience playing against an international team as there was a gaelic team from Shanghai at the tournament. In our match against the team from Shanghai the score was 23-0! The highlight for the students was the free pizza provivded  by the Hong Kong GAA. Thanks to the parents and Miss Chung for coming to support the team.
