UOI Group Inquiry

The children have started working on a group inquiry into an aspect of life in the past that they are interested in. The children have demonstrated an interest in many aspects of history including transport, old toys, entertainment in the past, buildings and life at BHS over the years. This week they have met with their group and started thinking about their wonderings and questions for research. In the coming weeks, they will work as a group with their teachers to inquire into their questions and use evidence such as photos, videos and written sources of information to find out how life has changed. All of the groups have shown a great deal of enthusiasm about their area of interest and are looking forward to the next stage in our inquiry cycle. Please take some time over the next week to ask your child what they are inquiring into and what questions they have about their area of interest.

Music

As part of our sharing unit, Mr Gibson has been working with each class on some music compositions and songs that they are going to share with you on the 11th May during our Year One sharing morning. This week they have brought home two sheets that Mr Gibson would like them to use for practise at home. Please see the message below from Mr Gibson.

Students should practise playing Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and Frère Jacques on their silent keyboard. Put both sheets next to each other or on the floor and using their index finger they can ‘play’ each note. It may help them to hum or sing the letter names as they play. Those who are more experienced on piano may like to try using both hands, one octave apart!
Thank you
Mr Gibson

                                     Central Idea:
Exploring evidence helps our understanding of people’s histories
                                      Lines of Inquiry:
                            Different types of evidence
                               My own personal history
How evidence helps us understand the past
This week has been a busy week in Year One. In addition to the group inquiries that the children have been involved in they have also continued to explore our central idea through dance, music and photography. This week the children have also been engaging in visual arts by exploring the skills associated with collage.
You will get to see all of the learning that the children have done during this unit on our Year One sharing day on Friday 11th May.
Memories of Beacon Hill

As you may, or may not, be aware, we are celebrating Beacon Hill’s 50th anniversary this year, including a special 50th celebration year book. If you are a past member of the Beacon Hill School community we would like to hear from you with any memories, suitable stories or simply any message to be included in the year book.

Please could you send your contribution to alumni@bhs.edu.hk. We would appreciate it if you could send the messages etc in by Friday 4th May. If possible, send us a photo of when you were at BHS!

Thanks in advance.

Mathletics
Well done to all the children who have been completing their Mathletics tasks and playing Maths Live at home. It has been pleasing to see so many children enjoying this online resource and improving their maths skills. All of the Year One Mathletics tasks are now open to each child. Please try and support your child in completing as many of the tasks as they can by the end of the year.
Dance Off
We are so pleased that so many Year One children have shown courage and put themselves forward to participate in the BHS Dance Off. Next week, the children who have signed up will perform in front of a panel of teacher judges and students. If your child is taking part please make sure that they know what music they are dancing to and support them at home by helping them to practice so that they are ready for next week. Please note that the children still need to wear their school/PE uniform on their Dance Off day and do not need costumes. We can’t wait to see all their moves!

mathsObjects and numbers can be divided into equal parts and groups

Next week in maths we will be starting our new maths unit based on fractions. The children will begin the unit by exploring some of the vocabulary of fractions such as, equal, half, quarter, whole. They will also be inquiring into shapes and how they can be divided into equal parts.

Mathletics

Please spend some time each week exploring the different activities that we have set for the children. Under the ‘play’ section, children can practise their basic facts by playing games with partners from around the world.  It is not intended that the children will do these tasks totally independently so please help your child to become familiar with the layout of Mathletics and how to go about completing the tasks.

Please support your child in learning how to log in using their user name and password rather than relying on an adult to do so for them. At school we are teaching the children to be independent with this skill.

Writing

During Writer’s Workshop the children will be continuing to work on their personal timelines by adding text to go with their photographs. They will be attempting to use past tense verbs and write in the first person as they write their sentences.

Reading

Next week our reading focus on inference continues. We will be encouraging the children to apply what they have learnt about inference to their own reading when they are using their book stacks in Reader’s Workshop. The children will also be accessing different types of written and visual texts when they are researching for their group inquiries into an aspect of life in the past.

Phonics
Next week we will be continuing Unit 5 phonics.
Phonemes:   ch, sh, th, wh
Camera Words:  like, do, says, what, going, give
We have been very impressed by the way in which many of the children are now reading and recognising the Year One camera words. We would now like them to begin learning to spell them correctly and use them in their own writing. Please help them at home by encouraging the correct spelling of these words when they are writing in their play.

Skipping Games
Over the past two weeks, in PMP lessons all of the Year One children have been practising their skipping skills. Skipping is not only fun and enjoyable but has many benefits for the mind and body.
1) Great for developing hearts! Your heart is a muscle and like any other muscle it gets stronger with exercise. Enjoying frequent physical activity like skipping enables the heart to become stronger and healthier.

2) Helps lay down healthy bones.
Your skeleton grows stronger if you do regular weight-bearing exercise. An activity like skipping that puts stress on the bone is recommended for children as it helps to stimulate optimum bone mass in developing bodies.

3) Improves and prepares muscles for other sports.
Whatever sport you play or want to become good at, skipping will help. Many top athletes use skipping as part of there training to develop fitness levels and explosive speed. 4) Brain gym. Skipping helps with many aspects of cognitive ability including those which will help with sport, movement and rhythm, and problem solving.

5) Concentration.
Studies have shown that regular exercise improves concentration levels. Further more a short five minute blast with a skipping rope will increase blood flow to the brain which is your bodies way of ‘putting on your thinking cap’!

6) Teamwork.
With the team games available like long rope games and double dutch games and also partner skipping you will have to work together to succeed.
 7) Goal achievement. From the very start skipping is about mastering skills and achieving goals.
