We have continued to explore our school community and discuss the different roles and responsibilities people have. The classes have started writing questions and arranging times to meet with and interview staff.
Some of the children have also begun to help organise our class jobs and daily routines. They are quickly learning that they can not always do what they want when they want as we have to fit in with other people and classes.
We really enjoyed seeing our first class assembly and think 2A did a great job teaching us about Diwali and helping start the celebrations. So many teachers and children have been involved throughout the week, even some of our own year 1 students and teachers made it into videos and even onto the stage.

Central Idea:
Individuals contribute to the way communities function

We will be continuing to inquire into the different roles and responsibilities of the people we seen in our school community; asking questions and recording findings to share with others.
We are also ready to think about how we can get involved in our school community and make some changes or improvements that will benefit us all. To start this off, the children will be helping our garden expert, Mr Melsom to plant some new seedlings to help regenerate our school Butterfly Garden.
Mother Tongue Story Telling
Last year a group of parents told stories to our students in their mother tongue during lunchtimes.  As you can imagine this was very popular with our students and a great way to share the range of languages we speak within our community.  If you are interested please click here to add your details.  Any time you can give and to any year group is really appreciated.  For those interested we can meet to discuss logistics in more details.  If you have any questions please email me at andy.thompson@bhs.edu.hk.
Parent workshop on reading
On Tuesday 17th October at 6.30 pm the B.H.S English team will be holding a workshop for parents about reading.   This will be a chance to learn practical ways to help develop your child’s comprehension skills.  Please look out for the information on how to sign up.  We would like to encourage all parents of year one children to attend.

maths

Next week our addition and subtraction maths unit will continue. We will be playing games and learning how to record additions and subtractions.

We are going to be working together to solve and investigate some opened ended problems around number pairs to ten and moving forward and backward along number lines.

Central Idea: Numbers can be added and subtracted

Through our unit we are also looking at how days of the week and the concept of time help us organise our lives and cooperate with others.

This is something you can support at home by talking through what is happening on different days and encouraging children to take notice of the times daily routines and activities happen.

Mathletics: Please spend some time each week exploring the different activities that we have set for the children. After half term we will open more topics for the children to complete.  Please use the half term holiday to ensure that children have completed some of the ‘set tasks’.  Under the ‘play’ section, children can practise their basic facts by playing games with partners from around the world.  It is not intended that the children will do these tasks totally independently so please help your child to become familiar with the layout of Mathletics and how to go about completing the tasks. Have fun!

We are moving own to writing to inquire, which will be closely linked to out UOI work. We will be encouraging the children to think carefully about the sounds they can hear for their word choices and reminding them that letter formation is important so that they can reread the information they collect.

We will also be introducing the idea of an audience for our writing and that they need to remember that others are interested and need to be able to understand our written thoughts.
Our reading focus for next week will be retelling.  When children retell or tell a story in their own words we encourage them to talk about how the story started, what happened in the middle, how the story finished, what the problem and the solution are and what the main idea and key details are.
Phonics
This week the new sheets with the phonics and camera words have been sent home. Please look out for these and help children learn the sounds and identify the camera words when reading at home.
Phonemes:   r l d b f h i u
Camera Words:  day of a he today for
Not all words can be decoded phonetically. We call these tricky words, ‘camera words’ because children must learn them as though they were taking a photo of the word with their ‘mind’s eye’. They are encouraged to memorise the part of the word which is tricky.

Congratulations to the following children for their Golden Book certificate on Monday.

1W – Jayden Wong

1P – Miles Hui

1L – Dhyana Dhupar
