Throughout the week, all the children have been learning about their classrooms and daily routines. They have had time to explore all the new equipment and places around their classrooms. We have been talking about initiating play and introducing ourselves to new classmates.

Miss Chung visited each class and shared with us important information about listening respectfully and showed the children videos of older students talking about all their wonderful thoughts about Beacon Hill School. We also saw many different ways we can be good friends.

All the students have made a great start and are growing in confidence everyday. We are looking forward to seeing them develop into articulate and successful learners.

Next week the children will continue to explore the different places and lessons they will be going to in Year 1. They will continue to meet different members of staff and gain an understanding of who they are.

As a class, we will establish our behaviour agreements and lunchtime routines. Children will be shown how they are to become responsible for their own organisation and tidying up at lunchtimes.

Taking responsibility for their behaviour choices will be a major theme in the coming weeks, as the children learn to understand the differences between red and green choices, and how these can affect our learning and relationships with others.

Going Home Arrangements – Please ensure the school is contacted if there are any changes to the children’s pickup plans for the end of the day. As teachers will be in class all day they may not see any emails sent to them directly. Please contact the school office. It is also important that you tell children about any changes before they come to school as last minute changes can be very unsettling and stressful to the children.
Naming – Please double check all bags, bottles, hats, shoes, lunch boxes which are brought to school are labelled with the children’s full name.
Snacks – Snacks should be put into 1 small reusable snack boxes clearly named. Please make sure the children can open and close the box by themselves. Sending chocolate is not a great idea as it easily melts.
Lunch – All children will need to bring lunch from home until Monday 3rd September. Please make sure the containers have clear name labels and can be opened by the children.  The children will have around 20 minutes to eat so please only provide an appropriate child’s portion size.
Monday 3rd September is the first day for children who will be receiving the lunches that are ordered and paid for.

Each class will be exploring basic number concepts and counting through stories, rhymes and games.

We will be ensuring that we are reading and writing numbers carefully.

You can support this at home by beginning to identify and discuss the numbers we see in everyday life around Hong Kong.

The students will be taking part in whole class story time and we will start talking about what we like about reading. Children will be encouraged to spend some time in the class book corners looking through the collections and sharing books with friends. We will begin to explore rhyming words and initial sounds.

Each child will be practising accurate name writing, ensuring they can recognise and form all the letters correctly. They will do this through art experiences, exploring letter shapes and tiles and completing name labels. The emphasis will be on only using capital letters for the first letter of their first and family names.

In a few weeks time, we will start attending the whole school Golden Book Assembly on a Monday. During this time the achievements of students will be recognised and celebrated. Please check back here to find out more and learn when our Year 1s have been given awards.
