Year 1 Update – Week 11

Tuesday 13th November – Year One Pizza lunch

Monday 19th November – Box of Hope collection in School

It was great to celebrate Diwali as a whole school this week. We enjoyed the dances from 1P students and some of our teachers. We also listened to the school community talking about why it was a special time for them and describing how the celebrated at home. Sharing what is special to us and appreciating other cultures is always a positive and exciting thing at Beacon Hill. It really helps our students connect with and understand their communities. Keep checking the school website and newsletters for photos and videos of the assembly.

Continuing on a similar theme we had the Duo Yuan / Diversity house day on Friday. The children proudly wore their house colours and watched an assembly created and presented by their house captains. The children also got to learn more about their house charity, HKSEDs who help train dogs to live with people who have visual impairments. The weather was on our side this week and we were able to go to the pitch. The children really enjoyed the space with their friends and took part in adult-led rotations where they played different games to build fitness, flexibility and skills needed to take part in many different sports.

Box of Hope – Thanks to the children who have already bought in a box of Hope

This year, BHS will once again be supporting Box of Hope. Box of Hope is an annual charity event aimed at providing useful and educational gifts for underprivileged children who live in Hong Kong and Asia, some of whom may never have received a gift before. All you have to do is provide some small educational and interesting, useful gifts for a boy or girl and put them in a beautifully wrapped or decorated shoe box. Please wrap the box and lid separately and secure with an elastic band. All boxes will need to be checked before they are sent off for customs purposes. So if you have some empty shoe boxes, save them for this worthwhile cause. Students will need to put a sticker on their box. The deadline for the collection of all boxes is Monday 19th November 2018

Our new unit will begin next week, so the children will begin to tune into using our imaginations as a way to help us create different ways to express ourselves.

This will be done under the PYP Transdisciplinary Theme of How We Express Ourselves.

Toys in school

Our Student Council has been inspired by a teacher’s visit to Impact HK who is a local NGO who support people who are less fortunate than us. Impact HK believes that kindness is very important so it looks to help people in poverty by finding people jobs and affordable housing, sports groups and language lessons. The Student Council will be presenting to the school at Golden Book on Monday 12th November. They will be asking the students if you have any towels, water bottles, tinned or dry food and adult clothing that you no longer need. If you do, there will be a collection box in the foyer. maths

Year 1 have been investigating shapes around them this week, they have been drawing, recognising, naming and looking at their differing properties. This will continue next week as we begin to create displays for the shared area and create our own shape patterns.

Mathletics:

Please help the children to complete the Mathletics tasks that have been assigned to your child. The children can also enjoy Maths Live and play other children live across the world.

As we move into our next unit we will be looking at how authors make their books interesting for readers. This will pull together the use of imagination, exciting word choices and layout features such as illustrations and pop-ups.

As you read together this week try to spot good examples of illustrations and the different adjectives and adverbs the authors use. Explain to your child why you like them and how they make you think and feel.
