Maker with Mr Lowe
This week all the children have worked with Mr Lowe in their Maker sessions to build bridges for the billy goats gruff. They worked with a partner to make the strongest bridge they could using paper, cups, straws, sticks, paper plates and card. We were very impressed with the perseverance and the risk taking attitudes that we have seen the children demonstrating in all of the Maker sessions so far.

Year One Bake Sale
Thank you to all of the parents that sent in cakes for the Year One Bake Sale. The children enjoyed all the yummy treats! We were really impressed by the number of children who told us that they had helped to make cakes or biscuits for the sale.

How the World Works

Central Idea:  People explore the properties of materials to help them design and make.

Next week we will continue to inquire into the properties of materials and how this knowledge can help us to make decisions about what materials to use when we are designing and making. The children will be introduced to a thinking routine called “Parts, Purposes and Connections”. They will be encouraged to take apart everyday items such as school bags and shoes and discuss the purpose of each part and how they are connected to each other.

Next week we will revisit our maths learning so far in relation to four operations, focusing on addition and subtraction. The children will have the opportunity to engage in some real life addition and subtraction problem solving experiences where they can apply the strategies they have previously learnt.

We will also be recapping on addition and subtraction strategies such as, known number facts, counting on and counting back, putting the biggest number first, fact families, doubles and near doubles.

Mathletics: – There are now some more activities open.  Please enjoy supporting your child with these tasks.  If your child is not yet logging onto Mathletics independently please support them to do so.

Please help the children to complete the Mathletics tasks that have been assigned to your child. The children can also enjoy Maths Live and play other children live across the world.

Next week we will continue to focus on the comprehension key of determining importance. The children will be looking at various non-fiction texts linked to materials and learning how to sort information that they gain into “important” and “interesting” information.

Next week during writer’s workshop we will be continuing to work on the use of the word “because” in our non-fiction sentence writing.

Unit  6 Phonics:  Next week our final phonics unit will begin.

The phonemes for this unit are: ck, ng, qu, x

The camera words for this unit are: away, see, look, very, once, we

Please support your children in learning to read and write the camera words from unit 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6.  When you are playing the suggested phonic games please use the letter sounds rather than say the name the letters of the alphabet.  If you need guidance about how to pronounce the letter sounds this link should help you  http://www.getreadingright.com.au/phoneme-pronunciation/
