Year 1 Update – Week 36

Friday 21st June – Last day for borrowing home reading books.

Monday 24th June – Class swaps – the children will met their Year  2 teacher.

Friday 28th June –     Last day of school. School finishes at 12:00

Materials

The children continued to explore materials by trying to solve the problem of how to get “Maggie” to the ground as fast as they could.   Maggie was a marble that the children needed to secure into a structure made of materials of their choice. Children trialed their models before reflecting on the speed as well as the strength of their design.

Battle of the Bands

Well done to all the children in Year One who participated in the B.H.S Battle of the Bands music fun.  It was lovely to see how the children had practised the songs and were very confident when performing to the audience.

Library books

This week the children’s had their last visit to the library for this school year.  All library books are now due back at school. Please look at home for any school library books and return them as soon as possible.

How the World Works

Central Idea:  People explore the properties of materials to help them design and make.

Next week the children will continue with solving the problem that they started thinking about last week.  They will plan for and then try out how to make a product to help them to solve their problem. Please talk to your child about what they are creating and how they are making their product.

maths

Revision:

Next week in Maths we will be revisiting some of our learning from this year.  There will be games to play, facts to practise, objects to measure and compare as well as problems to solve.

Mathletics: – There are now some more activities open.  Please enjoy supporting your child with these tasks.  If your child is not yet logging onto Mathletics independently please support them to do so.

Please help the children to complete the Mathletics tasks that have been assigned to your child. The children can also enjoy Maths Live and play other children live across the world.

Image result for determining importance

In reading our focus on determining importance continues.  The children will think of ways to show what they think is important in a text.  Some may make a poster and some may talk to a group of children.

Next week in writing the children will continue with creating ‘because’ sentences.  They will have a go at writing sentences that explain why somethings should never be made of certain materials. For example  “A house cannot be made of chocolate because it will melt on sunny days!” This will show their understanding of the properties of materials.

Unit  6 Phonics:  Next week our final phonics unit will begin.

The phonemes for this unit are: ck, ng, qu, x

The camera words for this unit are: away, see, look, very, once, we

Please support your children in learning to read and write the camera words from unit 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6.  When you are playing the suggested phonic games please use the letter sounds rather than say the name the letters of the alphabet.  If you need guidance about how to pronounce the letter sounds this link should help you  http://www.getreadingright.com.au/phoneme-pronunciation/
