Year 1 Update – Week 5

Monday 1st October:  School closed for the Public holiday

Tuesday 9th October: Parent Teacher Consultations

Thursday 11th October:  Parent Teacher Consultations

Friday 12th October:  Last day of school before the half term holiday.

At BHS the children learn through, practical, hands on and real life experiences. During our Explore, Play, Learn sessions, the children have been exploring our Unit Of Inquiry further by engaging in play and hand on activities that they are interested in. It has been so pleasing to see the way in which the children are already able to communicate with their peers with more confidence, are finding ways to solve problems when they are playing and are learning how to share, take turns and negotiate roles within their play.

The central idea for this unit is:  We connect with each other to create learning communities
The lines of inquiry for this unit are:
  • How we can get to know each other and ourselves (Connection)
  • Different types of learning and play (Form)
  • How to make our classroom a place for successful for learning (Function)

Next week we will continue the concept of communities.  Please check your child’s bag for a home learning activity and information about this is also at the end of this update.  This information will form part of the learning that we have in class next week.  We are hoping to build upon the children’s understanding that they are part of a learning community and have responsibilities connected to their classroom, other students and themselves.

BHS Lunchtime Experiences

At BHS we have lots of great clubs which our students really enjoy so Ms Chung challenged us to create even more!   As the student councillors, we interviewed our friends and classmates to find out their favourite clubs. We were wondering if any parents would like to help run these clubs?  Do not panic! You do not need to be an expert or world champion, just enthusiastic and willing to help. This could be as a one off session or more, it is up to you. Please click on this google form to volunteer.  The Student Council will then get in contact with you to organise the club.  We will help with all the logistics such as venue, students and resources.     Thank you for any help you can give us.
Home reading  Please remember to sign and comment in your child’s home reading journal after they have read to you.  This helps us to track how the children are reading at home.  It is important that the home reading journal and book come to school every day so that children can choose a new book to take home and read to you.
Parent-teacher conferences  If you have not already done so please book a time on the gateway to see you child’s class teacher on either Tuesday 9th October or Thursday 11th October.  These conferences are for parents and children do not need to attend.

maths Next week we will begin a unit on addition and subtraction.

The focus for this unit will be for the children to be able to:

Recall addition facts for single-digit numbers and related subtraction facts

Solve simple addition and subtraction problems using concrete material (manipulatives)

Solve simple addition and subtraction problems using strategies including part/whole

Recognise patterns in the number system

Next week the focus for maths will be making 10.  This is often called ‘friends of 10’ or ‘number bonds’.  This understanding forms the basis for addition and subtraction.  Children can then move on to making the connection to adding and subtracting using ‘teen’ numbers.  Next will the children will be playing games and having a go at solving problems to support their understanding of making 10.  They may come home talking about the different numbers of legs that animals have!

Mathletics:

Please help the children to complete the Mathletics tasks that have been assigned to your child. The children can also enjoy Maths Live and play other children live across the world.

Phonics:
Our phonemes for this unit are:
s m a c t g p o
Our camera words for this unit are:
she, to, are, I, the, was
Next week for English we will continue with our focus on the reading comprehension strategy of making connections.  The children will be encouraged to share the connections that they make when they are being read to as well as when they are reading independently.  We will use the following statements to help the children to talk about the connections that they make when reading, I remember when….,I made a connection….,This reminds me of…..
Please, can you help your child to practise this at home during home reading times and when you read to your child.

Due to typhoon Mangkhut there was no Golden Book assembly on Monday.  The next golden Book assembly will be on Monday 8th October 2018.

To support the children’s understanding of communities we would like you to support your child with a home learning task.  Please sit somewhere quiet and take the time to discuss the questions on the card that was given out at school today.

Here is a copy of the text that was on the card.

Year 1 Home Learning – Friday 21st September 2018

Central Idea – We connect with each other to create learning communities.

In UOI this week we have started exploring the concept of what a community is. We would like you to spend some time with your child having a discussion about the communities they see around them and how they see themselves within these communities. Your discussions can be had in your mother tongue language or in English. When you are discussing the idea of a community with your child please think about the following questions:

Who can they see in their community?           What groups do you belong to?       Who lives around you?

Help your child to record their ideas and thinking from your discussions on this piece of paper. You could include written responses, photographs, drawings, newspaper or magazine cuttings.

Please return this home learning on Wednesday 26th September.

Many thanks in advance for the time that you spend with your child on these discussions.
