BHS Dance Off 2018
Congratulations to the following Y2 children who made it through to the next round of the competition:
Eunice 2A        Amira 2A       Shawn 2D      Casey & Olivia 2D      Seraphina & Mona 2D
Khristie, Beatrice & Chloe 2D
They will perform again on Thursday 31st May- best of luck to them!

This week the children have been reading information reports and learning about the features they usually contain.

We have continued learning about the geography of the world and the continents. 2D have been making physical features of land using playdough.

And of course 2K have been very busy practising for their fantastic assembly! Congratulations 2K, what a fun and entertaining performance.

The children have enjoyed looking at atlases and locating different countries. They have also been trying to put puzzles together.

Central idea: Geography influences how people interact with their environment.

Lines of inquiry:

  1. The significant features of places -form
  2. How the features of a place influence our activities -causation
  3. The relationship of our location to other parts of the world – connection

Next week we will continue to learn some facts about the continents- their countries, geographic features and famous landmarks. The children will be using an atlas and information books to learn more. They will be learning where Hong Kong is on a world map and about its neighbouring countries.

The children will also experience a birds eye view of some of the land use in Hong Kong when visiting Victoria Peak on Wednesday.

Place Value

In Maths we will revisit Place Value.

Central Idea: We represent numbers and number relationships using the place value system

An inquiry into:

  • Ways to represent numbers
  • How we count numbers
  • The Base ten place value system

The children will be working towards the following outcomes:

  • Count by naming numbers in sequences, to and back from 999, moving from any starting point
  • Recognise, model, read, write and order three digit numbers
  • Apply place value to partition and rename, numbers to three digit numbers
  • Skip count by 2s, 5s and 10s starting from zero

The children will be involved in solving challenges and playing games.

Please continue to complete the activities on Mathletics.

Please continue to practise number bonds to 10, 20, 30 and 40:

Our English focus is information reports. The children will be reading reports and fact files about continents and countries, and will be writing in this formal, non-fiction style. The children will continue using their writing targets to focus on in class when writing.

The children will choose a country to research and complete a report about. They will be invited to think about how they would like to present their learning and asked to  consider how their use of text and images can be effective. They will also think about who they would like to share their finished work with.

In reading we will begin working on making inferences when reading, using the children’s background knowledge.

Please continue to read with your child at home and ask them to retell the story. Please encourage your child to write down the title of the text they choose from Big Universe.
There was no Golden Book this week due to the short school week.

Geography
Look at maps with your child and discuss the key and what the map shows. Discuss places and countries you have visited together, and any geographical features you may have seen- mountains, rivers, lakes, seas for example.
Please email your teacher with any photos you have of your travels so your child can discuss with the class. Thank you to the parents who have already sent photos to share.

Fun Friends

We talked about how to be a kind friend this week and made a step plan on how to make a new friend. Keep working on your child’s step plan or if it’s complete, start a new one. Encourage your child to notice when others are smiling, helping and listening, and if you notice it in your own child, let them know how much you like it! Try increasing time spent outdoors or in nature. Home activities are on page 53 of the pupil book.

 Spelling
The children have been given new spelling words to learn.
Reading
Please be reminded that in Year 2, your child will not bring home a reading book on Tuesday or Thursday they will need to read on Big Universe. Children login and select ‘My Library’ from the top of the page. At the right hand side in the ‘Filters’ section they can select the ‘Grade Level’ of books. If the children select kindergarten, grade 1 and 2 this is the most appropriate reading age for them (5-8 years).

Mandarin – All children are encouraged to take a reading book home on the days when they have Mandarin lessons.
