Assessments
For the next few weeks the children in Year 2 will have a computerised assessment with their class teacher. It is called PIPS (Performance Indicators in Primary School). This has been devised by Durham University and is used at Beacon Hill School with Year 1 and Year 2 children. It is used for assessing foundation skills in numeracy and phonics. We use it to obtain additional information on how to support individual children.
We will also be carrying out individual reading assessments. Your child will be informed about their next steps with reading.

Fundamental Movement Skills (FMS)
FMS has replaced PMP that the children did last year. It still takes place twice a week and requires parent helpers to support children at various movement stations.
The stations will be focused on the fundamental movement skills of locomotion, object control, body management, fitness, games and PMP.
FMS does require quite a few parent volunteers to support the children at the stations so that they get the most out of the programme. Please sign the e-notice which has been sent out if you would like to be a volunteer at one of your child’s FMS sessions.

The children collaborated in groups to create Essential Agreements about how they are expected to behave in school.

In Maths, the children have been exploring Place Value using dice, arrow cards and Diennes equipment.

Our Unit of Inquiry is about health and well-being. We have started to look at hygiene, relaxation, relationships, fitness and nutrition. The children have been creating Zen Doodles to help them to relax.

In English, the children have been discussing how a character’s feeling change throughout a story. We have also been exploring the structure of instructions in preparation for our writing.

Central idea

Lifestyle choices can affect human health and well-being

Lines of inquiry:

  1. What it means to have a balanced lifestyle (causation)
  2. The choices we make that affect our health and well-being (reflection)
  3. Lifestyle changes (change)

Next week the children will be drawing and painting activities which they do to help them maintain a healthy lifestyle. They will discuss what helps them to relax and support their well-being.

Place Value

Central Idea: We represent numbers and number relationships using the place value system

An inquiry into:

  • Ways to represent numbers
  • How we count numbers
  • The Base Ten place value system
  • Odd and even numbers (pattern and function)

The children will be working towards the following outcomes:

  • Count by naming numbers in sequences, to and back from 999, moving from any starting point
  • Recognise, model, read, write and order three digit numbers
  • Apply place value to partition and rename, numbers to three digit numbers
  • Skip count by 2s, 5s and 10s starting from zero
  • Round numbers to the nearest 10
  • Estimate up to 20 objects
  • Identify and describe patterns in odd and even numbers

The children have their Mathletics usernames and password in the front of their school diary. Please spend some time on it each week.

Writing focus: Writing to instruct

Text Type:

Writers choose words, punctuation and words for a purpose.

Related Language Concepts: imperative verbs, tense, capital letters and full stops.

The children will be discussing the language of instructional writing. They will listen to and give verbal instructions to one another. The children will also have the opportunity to ‘give instructions’ to a Micro:bit by learning some basic coding.

Well done to:
