Tuesday 4th December – Year 2 Pizza lunch

Wednesday 12th December – Christmas Concert 7pm – If your child is in the Junior Choir, you do not need to buy them a ticket
Friday 14th December – Last day of Term 1….12pm finish
Y2 Pizza Lunch: Tuesday 4th December
We will be having Pizza lunch on Tuesday 4th December 2018. As part of our theme of well-being and responsibility we would like to protect our environment from unnecessary waste. IF your child is having pizza, they will need to bring in a reusable lunchbox or plate to use. We greatly appreciate your support in this.

BHS Wellbeing Day for Students: Friday 7th December 2018
Rationale & Aims:
- To enhance student wellbeing.
- To connect as a school.
- To incorporate a sense of challenge as well as fun!
- To learn something new!
- Children will be in mixed age groups to develop a greater sense of others.
The Year 2 children are already feeling excited about next Friday. The range of activities being offered is incredible and children have chosen 3 activities from a broad selection. Activities include: Art and Craft, Origami, Calligraphy, Key Chain Making, Sewing, Painting, Football, Clay, Board Games, Skipping, Dance, Nature Walk, Animal Encounters, Music, Baking, Lego, Meditation, Yoga

THANK YOU 2K FOR AN AMAZING ASSEMBLY!
It was wonderful for the whole school to gain further insight into the inquiry that Year 2 have been working on for the last few weeks. 2K were able to provide some fantastic advice to everyone on how they too can take action to look after the environment. Small changes make a difference and at play times children could be heard talking about what they are now going to do to help. Super talking, acting and singing 2K. A truly memorable assembly, well supported by the parents of 2K. Thank you for coming!
Unit of Inquiry
This week the children cooperated in groups to discuss similarities and differences between celebrations they are familiar with. They started to make some interesting connections between celebrations. They considered the questions they could ask in order to find out more about a celebration.
The children also thoroughly enjoyed their first clay session with Miss Cassie.
The children participated in drama games and were keen to demonstrate how they could show different actions and emotions without speaking and making sounds. Some children found this challenging!
Maths
In Maths, the children made a clock and used it to show the class schedule. They thought more about which activities take a short time to complete and those which take longer. The children also considered what they do at the same time each day.
English
In English, the children shared the Christmas Story which they then retold and illustrated.
Playtime
The children are continuing to enjoy our new playground equipment.
Central idea: People show events are important through celebrations and traditions.
Lines of inquiry
- Features of traditions and celebrations (form)
- Why people celebrate (causation)
- Similarities and differences between different celebrations (connection)
Next week the children will start to research different celebrations. They will use books as well as the classroom ipads.
Please send in a photo of your child involved in a celebration of importance to your family. This can be emailed to your class teacher who will print it.
The children will learn about how Green Screen is used thanks to the expertise of Miss Kannis. They will have their second clay session and they will start to think about what they would like to show through Drama.
Central Idea:
Measurement involves comparing, ordering and sequencing objects and events
Lines of inquiry:
- Read and write the time to the hour and half hour.
- Identify and record dates of events on a calendar.
- Name and order the months of the year and seasons.
The children will continue to read and write the time. They will also start to solve problems involving time. Please involve your child in discussions about time as you proceed with daily activities. For example, ‘It’s five to seven, time to brush your teeth, 7.00pm time for a story….Now it is 7.30pm, bed time!”

Writing focus: Writing to describe (information report) and entertain (poetry)
The children will use the photographs they bring to school to consider questions about the celebrations and they will discuss their family’s traditions. This will help with their later research. Thank you to those children who have already brought photos to school.
In reading, the children will share poetry books and practise reading aloud.
The children will write their own poems about Christmas.

Games and Activities to Develop Vocabulary
We have noticed that many of our Year 2 children would benefit from developing a broader vocabulary. With this in mind, we would like to recommend some games you can easily play at home, or on the move that will give your child the opportunity to develop their awareness and language skills.
- I Spy With My Little Eye
Benefits: vocabulary development, phonics and spelling awareness, observation skills and focus
Equipment: None
Number of players: Unlimited
Location: Anywhere!
Say, “I spy with my little eye something beginning with …” Start playing the game using objects in the room you can see. Begin with obvious items and over time move to more discreet objects. You can vary the game by using the initial sounds (phonics), or letters (spelling) or even colours or numbers. You can increase the challenge level by saying, “I spy with my little eye, something that ends in …”
- Word Association Game
Benefits: vocabulary development, fluency, memory and recall
Equipment: None
Number of players: Pairs are good, but more players possible if everyone takes turns
Location: Anywhere!
The first player, chosen randomly, says one word out loud. The other player has to quickly say a word that has some connection with the previous word. Players lose if …
- They take more than three seconds to make a connection.
- They repeat a word that has already been said in this game.
- They are challenged and loses the vote.
The last player standing is the winner.
For example, one sequences of words might be:

At BHS we have lots of great clubs which our students really enjoy so Ms Chung challenged us to create even more! As the student councillors, we interviewed our friends and classmates to find out their favourite clubs. We were wondering if any parents would like to help run these clubs? Do not panic! You do not need to be an expert or world champion, just enthusiastic and willing to help. This could be as a one off session or more, it is up to you. Please click on this google form to volunteer. The Student Council will then get in contact with you to organise the club. We will help with all the logistics such as venue, students and resources.
