Y2 Christmas Party: Tuesday 11th December

The Year 2 Christmas party will be held on Tuesday 11th December. The children should come to school dressed in their party clothes. Please be reminded that we will be playing games with the children and they need to be dressed in comfortable and appropriate clothing (the children can get very hot). There will be no F.M.S. on this day.

Your child will need to bring the food that they have indicated on the table in the letter they have brought home. Your child only needs to bring enough food for 6 children. If there is a problem with the food that your child has offered to bring, ease send in something else appropriate. All boxes must be labelled.

We will not be providing paper plates and plastic cutlery at the party. Therefore your child will need to bring their own plate and cutlery. They will also need their water bottle so we can give them their choice of blackcurrant or orange cordial.

PLEASE DO NOT SEND ANY FOOD CONTAINING NUTS OR COOKED IN NUT OILS!

IMPACT HK
Thank you for all the support we are having with our Impact HK Drive. As you can see, we have already made an excellent start to our collection. Please donate towels, tinned or dried food and adult clothing so we can support families in Hong Kong who are struggling with poverty.
School Uniform
The weather is getting cooler but please ensure your child is wearing the correct uniform. Please, please ensure that your child has a school cap. Despite the cooler weather, the sun is still powerful. Skin damage from the sun at a young age can lead to problems later on in life, so help us keep your child safe by making sure they have a hat.

BHS Wellbeing Day for Students

The Year 2 children had an amazing day today, joining in a whole host of activities to support their wellbeing.

PTA Disco

Many of the Year 2 children had an absolute blast at this year’s PTA Disco. Thank you for supporting the school!

Unit of Inquiry

This week the children have been research into Christmas and noting the similarities and differences of Christmas around the world.

Your child should be able to retell ‘The Christmas Story’.

The children also thoroughly enjoyed their second clay session with Miss Cassie!

In drama, the children continued to explore body language and facial expressions. They began to think about how they could use these to represent different celebrations.

Maths

In Maths, the children thought about different celebrations and thought about when they happen throughout the year, using the language of dates and months. They also explored how calendars work.

English

In English, the children applied the Determining Importance comprehension strategy to skim and scan for key words that would help them answer their Christmas research questions.

Central idea: People show events are important through celebrations and traditions.

Lines of inquiry

  1. Features of traditions and celebrations (form)
  2. Why people celebrate (causation)
  3. Similarities and differences between different celebrations (connection)

Next week the children will be gaining some first-hand experience of celebrations in the Year 2 Christmas Party! They will also be completing their presentation of the research into Christmas.

If you haven’t already please do send in a photo of your child involved in a celebration of importance to your family. This can be emailed to your class teacher who will print it.

The children will be working in groups with Miss Kannis to prepare a fun video to show on Sharing Day. They will have their third clay session and they will start to think about what they would like to show through Drama.

Central Idea:

Measurement involves comparing, ordering and sequencing objects and events

Lines of inquiry:

  • Read and write the time to the hour and half hour.
  • Identify and record dates of events on a calendar.
  • Name and order the months of the year and seasons.

The children will continue to read and write the time. They will also start to solve problems involving time. Please involve your child in discussions about time as you proceed with daily activities. For example, ‘It’s five to seven, time to brush your teeth, 7.00pm time for a story….Now it is 7.30pm, bed time!”

Activities involving time have been opened on Mathletics.

Writing focus: Writing to describe (information report) and entertain (poetry)

The children will use the photographs they bring to school to consider questions about the celebrations and they will discuss their family’s traditions. This will help with their later research. Thank you to those children who have already brought photos to school.

In reading, the children will continue a range of reading poetry and reports for information and enjoyment.

The children will summarise their learning around Christmas. They will be writing to describe Christmas in the form of a report.

Well done to:

Spelling
Your child will need to learn their second list of spellings on the card.
Home Reading
Please read at home with your child each day and sign their Reading Journal. Please encourage your child to write the date and title in their Reading Journal, including for Big Universe.
In Big Universe, select ‘Library’. On the right-hand side you will be able to select the ‘grade’ for your child. The appropriate grade selection is kindergarten, 1st grade and 2nd grade. This covers the age group of our children at BHS.
Mandarin – All children are encouraged to take a reading book home on the days when they have Mandarin lessons.

Games and Activities to Develop Vocabulary

We have noticed that many of our Year 2 children would benefit from developing a broader vocabulary. With this in mind, we would like to recommend some games you can easily play at home, or on the move that will give your child the opportunity to develop their awareness and language skills.

  • I Spy With My Little Eye

Benefits: vocabulary development, phonics and spelling awareness, observation skills and focus

Equipment: None

Number of players: Unlimited

Location: Anywhere!

Say, “I spy with my little eye something beginning with …” Start playing the game using objects in the room you can see. Begin with obvious items and over time move to more discreet objects. You can vary the game by using the initial sounds (phonics), or letters (spelling) or even colours or numbers. You can increase the challenge level by saying, “I spy with my little eye, something that ends in …”

  • Word Association Game

Benefits: vocabulary development, fluency, memory and recall

Equipment: None

Number of players: Pairs are good, but more players possible if everyone takes turns

Location: Anywhere!

The first player, chosen randomly, says one word out loud. The other player has to quickly say a word that has some connection with the previous word. Players lose if …

  1. They take more than three seconds to make a connection.
  2. They repeat a word that has already been said in this game.
  3. They are challenged and loses the vote.

The last player standing is the winner.

For example, one sequences of words might be:

– Bus

– Stop

– Go

– Green

– Grass

– Garden

– Flower

Other well-known games we would recommend include, Pictionary, Charades

At BHS we have lots of great clubs which our students really enjoy so Ms Chung challenged us to create even more!   As the student councillors, we interviewed our friends and classmates to find out their favourite clubs. We were wondering if any parents would like to help run these clubs?  Do not panic! You do not need to be an expert or world champion, just enthusiastic and willing to help. This could be as a one off session or more, it is up to you. Please click on this google form to volunteer.  The Student Council will then get in contact with you to organise the club.  We will help with all the logistics such as venue, students and resources.

Thank you for any help you can give us.
