Professor Peter Sullivan Parents Workshop

Wednesday 22nd November  – 6:30p.m. in the school hall

Peter Sullivan is Professor of Science, Mathematics and Technology Education, at Monash University in Australia. He is the immediate past President of the Australian Association of Mathematics Teachers and was the lead writer of the Australian Mathematics curriculum.

Professor Sullivan is one of the world’s leading authorities in Mathematics, and will be making his a visit to Beacon Hill School this November. During his visit, Professor Sullivan will work alongside the teachers to challenge all our students to reach their full potential in Mathematics through the use of open-ended, rich learning tasks and problems.

We are thrilled to announce that Professor Sullivan will  run a  workshop for parents in order to enhance your understanding of how you may help your children in the development of Mathematical thinking. This is for parents only, there is no need for children to attend.

An e-notice will be sent to all parents, please let us know if you are attending.

We look forward to seeing you at the workshop.

Mother Tongue Story Telling
Last year a group of parents told stories to our students in their mother tongue during lunchtimes.  As you can imagine this was very popular with our students and a great way to share the range of languages we speak within our community.  If you are interested please click here to add your details.  Any time you can give and to any year group is really appreciated.  For those interested we can meet to discuss logistics in more details.  If you have any questions please email me at andy.thompson@bhs.edu.hk.

This week the last few children have  been busy preparing the songs, clay artwork and our dance for sharing day. They are looking forward to sharing all their learning with you on Friday morning. The children have also spent time reflecting on their time as a parent of the flour babies.

In Maths we continued to focus on different mental subtraction strategies and how we can use them with word problems, particularly looking for strategies to use with odd and even numbers.

The children have continued to focus on the reading comprehension strategy, inference. Inferring is to be able to ‘read between the lines’, when the author implies something but doesn’t exactly state it in the text. We children completed and edited their stories, particularly reflecting on how they added interesting detail, described feelings and used good adjectives and verbs. They also brainstormed and planned a narrative with their flour baby as the main character.

People worldwide have access to rights and opportunities that can look different.

  1. Difference between needs and wants (Perspective)
  2. Children’s rights and responsibilities (Responsibility)
  3. How children rights are protected (Reflection)

Next week we will continue to prepare for Friday when the children will share our current with you through the arts. The finishing touches will be made during our stage rehearsals and the children will be reflecting on what they learned in the different areas. We will also be preparing for the next unit and the children will complete their pre-assessment. This pre-assessment will help highlight the particular areas that the children especially need to learn through the unit.

Pattern and Function

Next week the children will be busy investigating, describing and representing patterns using numbers and other symbols. They will also be learning how to identify missing elements in patterns.

Mathletics passwords are in your child’s diary. Please make sure that an adult supports your child when working through the activities.

Next week the children will be writing their narrative where the Flour Baby is the main character. The children have considered different problems that they baby could incur and planned how the story could evolve.
During our reading lessons we are focusing on inferring. Inferring is to be able to ‘read between the lines’, when the author implies something but doesn’t exactly state it in the text.

homelearning
All our students have access to the words and dance they have been learning for the Year Three performance next Friday. Please give your child time and support as necessary to make sure they are ready. Please note, that your child may want to keep this as a surprise.
The children have now had access to this fortnight’s home learning themes for a week. Please support your child as necessary to bring their projects to share next Wednesday. We can’t wait to see them!
Please make sure that they spend time at the weekend learning their five individualised words. In the back of their Spelling Journal is a list of words for Unit 2. Students can learn these if they wish to challenge themselves. You could also use these words to discuss their meaning and put them into sentences together.
