The children are all now very familiar with the language of the ‘Zones of Regulation’, understanding that their main aim to is to be in the Green Zone at school (ready to learn) but that sometimes you may feel something else. We have been looking at when we feel these different emotions by playing card games and board games. It would be great for the children to have this language reinforced at home. Maybe you might like to play a board game together at home. Talk about when do you feel safe and happy and when might things change? What different behaviours might you see when playing together?

In Inquiry this week the children have continued to look at some behaviours when playing together. They have reflected on the behaviour shown and the emotion that person has. They then used this to explore the idea of empathy. We have also done activities that require the students to collaborate towards a shared goal.

In Maths this week the children have been examining different strategies to do multiplication. They have been learning how they can use the simple multiplication facts they know and apply these to more difficult equations. Please look at these together with your child. See if they can tell you what an array is.

In English this week the children have begin to look our final text type of the year, exposition with the purpose of writing to persuade. So far they have looked at how this text type is structured and some of the language used in this writing. We have also continued at looking to make connections, which we will continue with until the end of the year. The children will make links between the text and what they already know. They will be looking at text-to-self, text-to-text and text-to-world connections.

By working together people can achieve more.

We will be inquiring into:

  1. Shared goals in group situations  (connection)
  2. Skills and behaviour that support collaboration (responsibility)
  3. Impact of their behaviour on a shared goal (reflection)

This coming week the children will be learning about how we identify the different emotions by observing their behaviour and that of others from video clips of them playing games. They will also think about skills they may use during their trip to “Dreams Come True.” Once they return the students will reflect on their shared goal for the different activities, the skills they used and how they could improve.

Data Handling
  • Collect and organise data.
  • Interpret and draw conclusions by comparing data representations.

Direction

  • Describe and position using mathematical language.
  • Create and interpret grid references.
This coming week the children will be learning reviewing data handling and using this knowledge to create their own bar graphs, pictograms, Venn diagrams and tally charts. They will then analyse these to draw simple conclusions. We will also look at how students can describe direction using vocabulary like whole turn, half turn, quarter turn, clockwise and anti-clockwise.

Mathletics passwords are in your child’s diary. Please make sure that an adult supports your child when working through the activities.

Over the next few weeks we will continue to look at the comprehension strategy making connections. The children will make links between the text and what they already know. They will be looking at text-to-self, text-to-text and text-to-world connections.

The next two themes will be EXPLORE and ANIMALS.

Students were told the next two themes for their Home Learning. Please encourage your child to choose the theme that interests them. They can decide to use one of the ideas listed or choose their own. We look forward in seeing all the home learning on Wednesday 6th June.

Please make sure that they spend time at the weekend learning their five individualised words. In the back of their Spelling Journal is a list of words for the Unit. Students can learn these if they wish to challenge themselves. You could also use these words to discuss their meaning and put them into sentences together.
