Action in the PYP at BHS

Thank you for all the great examples of Action that you are taking.  Action in the PYP is when students are inspired through their learning and their experiences to make a difference to their lives or the community connected to real life issues and opportunities.  We would like to celebrate our students taking action outside of school

Please could you email examples to me, tsuik4@beaconhill.edu.hk,  and I will share through our newsletter.

There are different types of Action.  Last time I gave a description of how ‘participation’ is a form of action, below is an description of how advocacy is a form of action.

Type of Action Examples
Advocacy

Promoting an idea that you feel passionately about e.g. social, environmental or political

Making people aware of an issue you feel passionately about

Debating

Sharing ideas with friends, classmates or family

The children continued to learn about body systems, specifically the skeletal, muscular and nervous systems and are are gaining a better understanding of the interconnectedness between the systems. They continued to develop their technology and construction skills with Mr Lowe as they have been designing and building a representation of their favourite body system. Ask your child about their model and what technology they have used or will use!

The children continued to learn about fractions and how to identify even parts of the whole and about the relevant vocabulary identifying them. They have been ordering fractions and have been learning to recognise equivalent fractions.

English has been embedded into our Unity of Inquiry for this unit and the children have been working on tracking their thinking by asking questions when they read about body systems. They have continued looking at the skimming and scanning skills in order to answer the questions. They also continued to write an explanation of a body system using features of an explanation text with the help of flowcharts and their note taking.

Here are some photos of the week!

The Interaction Between Body Systems Help us Keep Healthy and Survive

The children will be inquiring into:

How body systems work (function)

Interdependence and independence between body systems (connection)

The impact of lifestyle choices on the body systems (responsibility)

The children have been diving deeper into a body system that they are most interested in. They have gathered lots of information and are now beginning to think about how they can apply the technology skills they have learnt from Mr Lowe to enhance their model of their chosen body system.

Central Idea:

Fractions are ways of representing equal parts of a whole

The children will be learning to:

  •               Fractions of shapes
  •               Fractions of amounts
  • Making and comparing simple fractions

Next week, the children will continue to explore fractions of shapes and begin to make comparisons. They will also be looking at identifying similar fractions and familiarising themselves with fractions and their different forms.

Next week the children will consolidate what they have learnt about various body systems into cause and effect sentences and complete an explanation slideshow demonstrating their learning.

Reading

Comprehension Strategy:  Asking questions

The children will continue to practise the skill of asking questions as they read in order to understand what they are reading or to extend their learning. They will also be looking at the skills of skimming and scanning in order to find answers to what they read.

Congratulations to these students for being awarded a Golden Book Certificate this week!
