Action in the PYP at BHS

Thank you for all the great examples of Action that you are taking.  Action in the PYP is when students are inspired through their learning and their experiences to make a difference to their lives or the community connected to real life issues and opportunities.  We would like to celebrate our students taking action outside of school

Please could you email examples to me, tsuik4@beaconhill.edu.hk,  and I will share through our newsletter.

There are different types of Action.  Last time I gave a description of how ‘participation’ is a form of action, below is an description of how advocacy is a form of action.

Type of Action

Examples

Advocacy

Promoting an idea that you feel passionately about e.g. social, environmental or political

Making people aware of an issue you feel passionately about

Debating

Sharing ideas with friends, classmates or family

What an incredibly busy week it has been in Year 4!

MONDAY – L.E.A.P. visits

The children thoroughly enjoyed their latest visit to the Life Education Activity Programme. Amongst other things, they learnt about the safe use and handling of medicines, healthy eating, caffeine and the circulatory system!

TUSEDAY – Liz Million – Visiting illustrator

Visits

The students were extremely excited to meet a real-life illustrator as part of our Green Book week celebrations! Liz Million is a UK-based children’s book illustrator and she talked to us about the life of an illustrator and taught us how to draw a dinosaur and a volcano ready for our new U.O.I.!

WEDNESDAY – Hong Kong Philarmonic Orchestra

We took part in the Keys to Education schools programme and enjoyed listening to this amazing orchestra play us Beethoven and Peter and the Wolf!

Talent Show auditions

Some very brave Year 4 students got up in front of their classmates this week in order to audition for this year’s BHS Talent Show. Their classmates were very supportive audiences who then had the opportunity to vote for the performer(s) they wanted to get through to the Grand Final at the PTA International Food Fair!

Green Book Week

All the Year 4 classes focused their English work this week around this beautiful text, “The Curious Garden.” It has a strong environmental message about making our cities greener. Here are some sketches to demonstrate how we would “green”Hong Kong!

We are SO excited about putting our games into action at the International Food Fair!!!! See you all there!

Central Idea:

Changes of the Earth and atmosphere impact the natural world

Lines of Inquiry:

  1. How the different components of the Earth are interrelated (connection)
  2. Why the Earth has changed and is continuing to change (change)
  3. How we know the Earth has changed (reflection)

Over the coming weeks, students will be investigating how the Earth’s surface changes over time as a result of natural processes and human activity. They will look to understand what the different components of the earth are and the ways in which they are interrelated. Next week, we will guide the students through an inquiry into VOLCANOES.

Central Idea:

Shapes can be identified, classified and used in different ways.

Lines of Inquiry:

An inquiry into…

  • the relationship between 2D and 3D shapes
  • symmetry and transformations can be found in the environment
  • angles in 2D and 3D shapes

Over the coming week, the students will be looking closely at 2D shapes with a particular focus on quadrilaterals and describing their properties… rectangles, oblongs, squares, rhombus, trapeziums, trapezoids, parallelograms, etc, etc!

Please continue to help your children to practise their multiplication tables at home. Click the image below to access some online games that might support this….

Writing Focus: Writing to explain
Explanations detail and logically describe the stages in a process, such as the water cycle, or how a steam engine works.  Other examples could be how a law is made, or why we blink when we sneeze.

Comprehension Strategies: Questioning

Questioning is a strategy that readers use to engage with the text. Questioning techniques help the reader to clarify and comprehend what he is reading.
