Living and Growing

Dear Parents,

In a few weeks time, our Year 4 students will be having a couple of in class sessions on ‘Living and Growing’.  In these sessions they will be shown some educational videos which cover the theme of Changes we go through as we grow and develop.  Please contact me at susan.chung@bhs.edu.hk if you would like to borrow the DVD to view at home beforehand stating your child’s name and class.

Kind regards,

Susan Chung

Pizza Lunch

Dear Parents,

We will be having Pizza lunch on Tuesday 21st May 2019.  As part of our theme of well-being and responsibility we would like to protect our environment from unnecessary waste.  If your child is having pizza, they will need to bring in a reusable lunchbox or plate to use. We greatly appreciate your support in this.

致家长:

我们将会在5月21日安排批萨饼午餐。我们今年的主题是身心健康和责任。为保护环境和减少浪费,如果您的孩子参加这次活动,请自备可循环再用的餐盒。感谢您的支持。

Swimming Lessons

Year 4 swimming lessons will take place on every Tuesday in June (weather permitting). Each class will have one hour at the Kowloon Tsai pool with professional swimming coaches working with differentiated groups. Look out for an eNotice that you will have received earlier this morning from Mr Teahan, as well as a questionnaire about your child’s current swimming ability.

Tuesday (begining 4th June)
4F – 9-10am*
4A – 10-11am
4W – 11am-12pm

*Please note that if your child is in 4F their bus to the pool will leave at 8.40am so they will need to be in school very punctually on Tuesdays once swimming begins.

4A’s Assembly

Thank you to 4A for an amazing assembly and reminding us about the importance of being kind to one another. Thank you to all of those parents, children and adults who joined in at the end!

U.O.I

The students completed a provocation to help them tune into their new unit. They considered how they would deal with a range of internet safety-related scenarios.

English

Students wrote an independent, unaided explanation text to describe volcanoes. They organised their information on a flow chart to help them. They included causal conjunctions, cause and effect, time connective and technical vocabulary in their work.

Maths

This week Year 4 have been thinking about temperature and using thermometers. They learned to estimate and measure temperature in Celcius as well a begin to develop temperature landmarks (e.g. boiling and freezing point, room temperature and body temperature).

Next week the students will be thinking about their own technology usage. They will start to look at some different digital tools that they can use to express themselves through The Arts. They will be introduced to ‘common sense education’, where they will start to think about their digital citizenship and taking ownership of their digital lives.

Central Idea:

Events have attributes that can be measured using appropriate tools

Lines of Inquiry:

  • The selection and correct use of standard units
  • Solving real-life problems using time, temperature, length, mass and capacity

Next week, the students will explore measurement again. This time our focus will be on the standard units used to measure mass (kilograms) and capacity (litres). This work will include learning how to read the relevant scales to measure these units as well as practical work to put these skills into practice in real life. We will also undertake some problem-solving challenges related to these areas of measurement.

Please continue to help your children to practise their multiplication tables at home. Click the image below to access some online games that might support this….
