Year 4 Update Week 4

Monday 9th September – BHS staff training day….school closed

Super Readers Club – This week our reading support groups began. Our Super Reader pull-out groups with Ms. Ma are aimed at supporting our readers in each class that need a little extra help with their reading comprehension. These will run possibly up until Christmas for 2 lessons per week for each Year 4 class. Ms. Ma will be exploring a variety of fiction and non-fiction texts, helping to extend vocabulary, supporting understanding, discussing thinking and reinforcing the comprehension strategies that we do here in class. Your child might bring home the text they used here at school and they can enjoy reading it and discussing it with you.

Your class teacher can discuss this further with you alongside your child’s reading age and targets during our upcoming parent Teacher Conferences.

Hot Weather – bring a hat every day! Also, can the girls please ensure their hair is tied back so it stays off their back, neck, and face – it’s just so much cooler and comfy for them. Thanks.

Learning Centre – Please help us to make sure the children are ready for borrowing by sending in their red library folder on their allocated Learning Centre day. Thank you.

Correspondence with Your Class Teacher – if you have messages or important information to pass on to your class teacher it is advisable to write them a quick email rather than send a message in the Home-School Diary. We can access this a lot easier, it’s more reliable and you should usually get a confirmation or a response that day. Can you please refrain from calling the school office and requesting that we call you back? Due to planning and preparation commitments, duties and after school clubs we may not be able to make that phone call until many hours later. Thank you so much for your consideration here.

PE – just a kind reminder for the children to wear their full PE kit on their specific PE days. This includes blue PE kit, white socks, white trainers, full water bottle (with water!), hair tied back and school hat. PE days are as follows…

Student Council Five Ways to Well Being Competion

English

We continued to work with Ms Jeves on making fantastic choices with our words! Sharing, revising and editing were important skills that we continued on with. We also played some fantastic word extension and sentence building games!

Maths

Place Value continued in class this week. Ordering numbers, placing numbers on a number line, greater than and less than and rounding were all consolidated here in class.

Mr Thompson also came in to work with us on some creative methods to figure out prime and composite numbers.

UOI

This week we took a look in to our own experiences. A simple journey to school can be so very different for children from other districts and of course countries. We took a look at how some children get to school and compared and contrasted it to our own.

Learning Centre

This week 4J was lucky enough to be the very first winners of the Learning Centre Borrowing Awards…we borrowed the most books for the month of August. Well done to them! Let’s see if it can be your class in September. Don’t forget to bring your folder on your borrowing day.

Dance continued to be our focus in our class PE lessons. We will be continuing this for the next few weeks and hope to focus on making our own sequences and putting them together to make a short dance.

This is our very first unit of Year 4 but this year it is a two-part UOI. The first half we will work on for this first four weeks of school and we will come back to it at the end of the year. We will be spending lots of time thinking about our own values and beliefs and things that are important to us and our family. It would be great if you could follow up these discussions with your child at home. What do you value as a family?

Writing – during this UOI we will be focussing on using fabulous vocabulary choices in our personal writing! We would love to see the children using fantastic words and interesting and creative sentence structures.

Throughout this UOI we are very lucky to have Ms Jeves, our Teaching and Learning Coach, continuing to come into work with us on improving our writing through extending our vocabulary.

Reading – we will be focussing on the comprehension strategy of Visualising throughout this UOI. Good readers construct mental images as they read a text. By using prior knowledge and background experiences, readers connect the author’s writing with a personal picture. Through guided visualisation, students learn how to create mental pictures as they read.

Throughout the year we will focus on all of the comprehension strategies to help with our understanding, fluency and comprehension.

Maths – please continue to work on the Mathletics tasks that your teacher has set for you. These could be to consolidate the Place Value work we have been doing in class or to revise the concepts or topics from Year 3 or they may even be concepts to pre-assess our next maths UOI.

Practicing and reviewing quick recall of your number facts is important! There is a great online program called Hit the Button which can help you to do this.

Prodigy – all 3 classes can continue their Prodigy maths gaming at home too!

Reading – please continue reading nightly together and signing your child’s diary. A comment every week would be a nice touch too. There are also questions in the front of the reading diaries that you could ask your child to help them with their comprehension. Don’t forget the importance of reading TO your child also. The teachers are busy assessing your children’s reading age and your child may come home in the next few weeks with a new reading colour band.

Spelling – please continue to learn your personal words at home ready for our buddy test on Friday.
