Memories of Beacon Hill

As you may, or may not, be aware, we are celebrating Beacon Hill’s 50th anniversary this year, including a special 50th celebration year book. If you are a past member of the Beacon Hill School community we would like to hear from you with any memories, suitable stories or simply any message to be included in the year book.

Please could you send your contribution to alumni@bhs.edu.hk. We would appreciate it if you could send the messages etc in by Friday 4th May. If possible, send us a photo of when you were at BHS!

Thanks in advance.

Uniforms – it would be great if we could please keep on eye on the weather and temperature forecast.  Some children are coming to school still dressed in their winter uniforms and are getting awfully hot here at school.  Over the weekend please make sure they have their summer uniforms out and available to wear.

Body Odor – We have been noticing here at school that some of the children in Year 5 are starting to develop body odor.  It is sometimes difficult for parents to accept that their little ones growing up but unfortunately it does happen.  And with growing older comes body changes.  Here’s a short article I’ve found to give some info about the onset of puberty for your reference.

When is it safe for Kids to Use Deodorant?

Most kids need to begin using a deodorant when they are going through puberty.  Some kids, however, do have noticeable body odor and need to use a deodorant every day even before they start puberty.

Noticing the First Signs of Puberty

Since body odor is linked to puberty, it is important to determine if your kids have started puberty already.  Keep in mind that girls typically start puberty between the ages of 8 and 13 years, while boys start when they are between 9 and 14 years.

Controlling Body Odor

If your child is not starting puberty but has a strong body odor, there are ways you can help the child control any odors beyond just using deodorant. It’s important to teach your child personal hygiene basics, including:

  • Bathing daily—in the morning, if possible
  • Showering after sports or other sweat-inducing activities
  • Washing all parts of the body, including the armpits, genitals, and feet when they take a bath or shower
  • Wearing clean underwear, socks, and clothes every day
  • Buying loose-fitting cotton clothing, which may help the child sweat less
  • Watching the child’s diet to see if something they are eating, like garlic, onions, or spicy food is causing or contributing to their body odor.

You might also change the brand of soap your child uses or consider using an antibacterial deodorant soap

Deodorants for Pre-Teens

If these tips don’t stop your child’s body odor, you may want to introduce your child to using deodorant. Since there aren’t many deodorants that are designed for children at this age, you might consider using one that is marketed for pre-teens or teens.

It is not necessary to use a natural deodorant as most deodorants do not contain any harmful ingredients. Some people are concerned about the aluminum content in antiperspirant, but studies have shown little risk associated with using products containing aluminum on your skin. But if you are concerned about the contents in antiperspirant, try using a natural product or just a deodorant.

Stationery – As we continue our final term please take time to check your stationery supplies. A number of students are missing whiteboard pens and erasers and glue and we would appreciate if these supplies could be replenished.

PE Days – as we begin a new UOI next week you may find that your child’s PE days have changed.  This can be a bother but unfortunately, due to timetable changes, this can’t be helped.  Here are the days for PE for UOI 5.

5F – Tuesday and Thursday (Miss Fearn will email you if these days change unexpectedly through the UOI)

5C – Monday and Wednesday

5D – Monday and Tuesday

Can all children please remember to wear their PE kit on these days each week? Thanks.

UOI

Central Idea : Energy can be converted and transformed to support everyday life.

An inquiry into…

  • transformation of energy  (function)
  • renewable and non-renewable energy (connection)
  • sustainable energy use in everyday life (causation)
Concepts : function, causation, connection
Related Concepts : forms of energy (electricity, kinetic, potential), sustainability, transformation of energy.
Learner Profile : knowledgable, thinker
Attitudes : curiosity, independence
This week we continued on with our UOI work and 5F have lots of fun making water turbines….

More energy discussions and the children have familiarised themselves further with different sources of energy ready to write up their own reports on their chosen topic.
Learning Technology –  The work that all Year 5 classes have been doing with Mr. Lowe has been fantastic. The children and getting ready to construct their own energy efficient room and have been getting ready the parts to go inside it.  Ask them how their room is progressing and watch out for more photos of these in the following weeks!
Number Maths
Central Idea – By analysing patterns and identifying rules for patterns it is possible to make predictions.
We’ve continued on with our Patterns and Function UOI this week, the children really have worked hard to identify patterns and think about how they are growing, constructing term tables, develop formulae and predict future terms.  It’s really complicated stuff!

Strand Maths
Central Idea – Accuracy of measurements depends on the situation and the precision of the tool.
Angles continued to be our focus again this week and we are becoming more and more competent at accurately drawing and measuring a variety of angles using a protractor.  Next week we move on to mass and will enjoy some practical measuring activity to improve our measuring skills once again.
In reading, children have continued to work on using strategies to help them determine important information from a variety of texts. With questions in mind and key vocabulary to look out for, students have been identifying facts which are relevant and those which are not relevant but interesting. Students have then been grouping these facts into appropriate paragraphs. In cooperative groups the children have taken a paragraph each and written their facts in their own words which will be used to create a completed report. Next week children will work on editing their writing by focusing on improving paragraph and sentence structures.

We have continued our deep dive into non-chronological reports this week.  Lots of collaborative work on skimming, scanning, highlighting keywords and note taking has been reinforced this week.  Ms. Jeves has worked with us on this also.  Our paraphrasing skills have improved and we realise the importance of not copying out chunks of information and academic honesty.

homelearning

  • Read the Weekly Update
  • Mathletics – continue with the set tasks
  • Reading – keep up with their reading every night.  Don’t forget to get Reading Journals signed every night and children should be reading every night.
  • Spelling – each Monday the children are sent home their 10 personal words that they need to learn for the week.  Please, can a parent (or responsible adult) support the children by...testing them (written or oral), getting them to put their words into interesting sentences (written or oral), discussing the meanings of the words, thinking about synonyms and antonyms of that word, discussing words with a similar meaning etc.
  • UOI – Continue to think about your room design ready for Mr Lowe’s LT lessons.  Take a look around your house and think about and plan out how you might make the items that you want to go in your room for example beds, light fittings, kitchen sink, television sets etc Are there any little items or old toys that you could bring in to jazz up your room?
