Start of Year Assessments – The children have worked really well this week through all the assessments that have been thrown at them!  Number Maths pre-assessments – these have helped us decide who needs support with their Place Value work and will get extra support from Mr Pheasant during our Number Maths sessions.

Mental Maths Tests – these have helped us to decide who will be getting a little extra support in mental maths from Ms Mak each week.

Spelling Testing – this is to find out which personal spelling words the children will start to learn for their home learning task each week.

Summer Recounts – we are assessing the children’s writing ability with this unaided writing task.

All the while the children have been getting used to the routine and procedures in each individual classroom.

Here are some photos from 5F from this week….

Summer Recount – we took out our summer souvenier packs to talk about our summer with our friends and then we got started on our writing!

Unscramble the Central Idea – we took some time this week to start to ‘tune-in’ to our new Unit of Inquiry.   We unscrambled the Central Idea and annotated our ideas.

The Dot – For our provocation for this UOI we read the book ‘The Dot’ by Peter H Reynolds and had lots of discussion about its message.  We then used it as inspiration to make our very own dot pictures.

PE : Dance – we worked so hard on our first PE unit of dance and Miss Claudia has been helping us to get our moves ready for our assembly.

Take a Line for A Walk –  We kicked off with our very first art project and took a line for a walk.  Our summer holiday was our inspiration for these striking compositions by 5F.

Place Value Games : Nice or Nasty – this week we had loads of fun playing a new number place value game called ‘Nice or Nasty’….maybe you could all play together at home!  Roll a die for your partner and try to make the highest/lowest number you can, it’s easy.  The Year 5 team truly believe that games are essential to help the children reinforce the skills taught in guided lessons and are fun to boot!  Ask your child how they went and who won!

Central Idea – Artists can use a process to express messages and ideas.

An inquiry into…
  • the tools and techniques artists use (form)
  • how messages are interpreted and conveyed (perspective)
  • how can I improve my work (responsibility)
Concepts : form, perspective, responsibility
Related Concepts : style, influence, expression, choice (techniques)
Learner Profile : reflective, communicator
Attitudes : appreciation, creativity
Number Maths – Place Value
Central Idea –
An inquiry into…
  • patterns and relationships of tenths and hundredths
  • the patterns of 6+ digit numbers and how they are represented
Strand Maths – Shape and Space
Central Idea –

An inquiry into…
  • creating, describing and visualising 2D and 3D shapes
  • transforming shapes
  • locating points on a grid
Writing Focus – our writing focus for this unit of inquiry will be a genre of the children’s own choice.  Here at school, we will be working on adding more description to our sentences and the children will be given a chance to utilise these skills in their own writing.  They may choose to write a traditional tale, an adventure story, some science fiction just to name a few.
Reading Focus – Self-Monitoring and Visualising
For the duration of this UOI, our Reading comprehension strategies will be Visualising and Self-Monitoring.  We will introduce these strategies to the children in the upcoming weeks and the demonstrate way they can use them to help them better understand what they are reading.  It would be fantastic if you could chat with your child about these and encourage them to use these whilst reading at home.  Over the next couple of weeks, we will be choosing our own personal ‘book stacks’ for use in school and we will be facilitating to use of these to try out our strategies.
Well done to this week’s lucky Golden Book Certificate achievers….
5F – Rei Kitamura and Ellie Huang
5D – Rakin Kaka
