Unit of Inquiry

Science Lessons at Island School Science Labs – this week we had a great time as we headed over to Island School to work with Mrs Wightman in her science lab to learn about Energy transfer.  We got on our goggles, learned about how to handle and read scientific instruments and performed a very exciting experiment. I am sure you heard all about it on Monday night!  It certainly gave us a great taster as to what it is going to be like in Secondary School.  Thank you so much Mrs Wightman!

   

Unscramble the Central Idea – we worked on finishing our unscrambles this week.

Energy Pathways – here are our energy pathways group organisers where we tried to plot the transfer of energy….some of us were able to easily able to make the connection way back to the dinosaurs!

ReadingOnce again this week we have spent some time enjoying good books and good narrative nonfiction stories.

Illustrator Visit – This week we all were lucky to have a guest illustrator come into school to work with us all in this Green Book Week.  

Illustrator, author, storyteller – Liz’s character matches her work – colourful, imaginative and enthusiastic. Liz has been illustrating since 1999 and has travelled far and wide for Authors Abroad and is just back from visiting schools in Vietnam.

Green Book Character Dress Up – What fun we had today to show our school spirit!  We had some very creative characters come to school on Tuesday.  We had a range from environmentalists, modern characters, butterflies and fairies, sports characters, Harry Potter characters and also a Robin Hood, Mathilda and a Ballerina!  Well done all who joined in.

Decorate Our Door Competition – this week we also worked hard to decorate our door. The Year 5 mentor text that we have been reading and discussing is called Energy Island and we made pinwheels to go on our door with our text blurb. Take a look at our finished product!

Maths – In amongst, all the fantastic Green Book Week activities this week we did manage to continue on with Fractions. Decimals and Percentages for Number Maths this week and Probability for Strand Maths.

Determining Importance – Readers read with a purpose and look for what is important.

Writing Focus – Narrative Nonfiction

Big Idea: To get information across to a reader in an engaging but clear way using various structures depending on the purpose

  • Read the Weekly Update
  • Mathletics – continue with the set tasks or feel free to try any others that you feel you want to practice.
  • Prodigy – please continue on with your Prodigy online games.
  • 5F & 5C – please continue to use Quizlet to help you learn your spelling words and meanings.
  • Spelling –  The children are sent home their 10 personal words that they need to learn for the week. The will happen on a Monday for 5F, Wednesday for 5D and Friday for 5C. Please, can a parent (or responsible adult) support the children by...testing them (written or oral), getting them to put their words into interesting sentences (written or oral), discussing the meanings of the words, thinking about synonyms and antonyms of that word, discussing words with a similar meaning etc.
  • Reading –  The children will be choosing leveled readers based on their own ability and are expected to read each night for at least 20mins at home with a parent.  The children need to record their reading in their Reading Journals and parents can you please sign your child’s journal each night? Journals need to be returned to school each morning to be checked and will come home each evening (except Friday).  Children may use Big Universe twice a week (only) as their choice of home reading
