Each week we will give you some top tips to help you get your child ready for our upcoming Year 5 Camp…..so watch this space!
- Please return your forms and cheques in as soon as possible…it makes it so much easier for our camp providers to organise the activities and meals based on the information that you provide.
- Go on a hike! On the first day we hike up and down hills in the countryside and the children cope so much better if they have done one before.
- Self-regulate……please let your child make their own decisions about what to wear to school and on the weekends; They need to be able to self-regulate their clothing and bodies depending on what they are feeling and the weather.
- Make sure they can make their own bed – this is one of the first things they do when getting into their dorms. Their camp counsellors (and teachers!) will not do this for them.

BHS Lunchtime Experiences
At BHS we have lots of great clubs which our students really enjoy so Ms. Chung challenged us to create even more! As the student councillors, we interviewed our friends and classmates to find out their favourite clubs. We were wondering if any parents would like to help run these clubs? Do not panic! You do not need to be an expert or world champion, just enthusiastic and willing to help. This could be as a one-off session or more, it is up to you. Please click on this google form to volunteer. The Student Council will then get in contact with you to organise the club. We will help with all the logistics such as venue, students and resources.

Snacks – Some of the children have been coming in with some very healthy snacks already but please do try and include healthy snacks as much as possible. Snacks which are high in sugar can lead to difficulties concentrating due to their quick release of energy. Some good ideas might be fruit, wholewheat crackers or low sugar yoghurts. These healthy snacks not only support their body development but can also improve their attention span too.
Sleep– As always, it takes a little time for the children to readjust to their early mornings after a long summer holiday. Please do try and help them get as much sleep as possible. 9-10-year-olds should be aiming for around 10 hours a night.
Learning Centre– On days where the children visit the Learning Centre with their class, they will need to bring their book bags if they wish to borrow books. These days are as follows. The children also have access to our Learning Centre before school – so if they happen to forget their LC book on their specific day they can always pop up there and exchange it in the mornings after they unpack their school bag.

PE – please note that some PE lessons might have changed days. Can you please take a look at when your child’s PE days will be for this new UOI? Full PE kit must be worn on these days…thank you.

Headphones – can all children make sure their headphones are at school every day, please? Some activities we do need them to use headphones and as they are part of their required stationery list they should be here in school ready for use when required.
Number Maths – Multiplication and Division
We have started to begin our work on Multiplication and Division this week. In 5D, as well as completing our pre assessment, we have been working open ended problems to develop our mathematical fluency and problem solving. In 5D we looked at how many answers we could find for

It has more layers that you first think!
Strand Maths – This week we have been working with co-ordinates we practiced locating shapes on a grid, locating animals in a zoo and even plotting shapes onto 4 quadrant axis.
English (Writing) – This week we have been extending our amazing initial paragraphs into full length narratives, planning each paragraph as we go. The children in 5D have shown real pride in their writing lately and are looking forward to completing their stories over the holidays.
English (Reading) We have been looking into summarising and synthesising this week so to get ourselves ready for next term and link to our unit, we summarised the water cycle! 1 person from each group got to go outside and look at an image of the water cycle. They then had 10 seconds to describe it. This meant the children had to be careful to include the most important parts, just like when you summarise.
Technology with Mr. Lowe –
This week all classes worked with Mr. Lowe and their class teachers on our first maker projects! The children were asked to design a water filter to clean some dirty water that Mr. Lowe had made. They had a great time working in groups and teams to develop their skills.
UOI :
After discussing where all the water in the world is, we learned that a whopping 97% of our water is in the oceans, salty and undrinkable. This got us thinking? What if there was a way of removing the salt? As a class we discussed and realised that nature already does this through evaporation! Could we harness the power of the sun to make our own fresh water? We created an experiment to find out!
Transdisiplinary Theme – Sharing the Planet
Central Idea – Peoples actions can impact our water resources.

- patterns and relationships of tenths and hundredths

Writing Focus
For this unit of inquiry, our new writing focus will be explanation texts. Over the next few weeks, we will be thinking about and discussing we make a good explanation text and we will be deconstructing some good examples of explanations. We then will move on to writing our own and self-monitoring as we go along…fixing up mistakes and improving the first drafts of our writing. At the same time, we will be learning how to take notes using a very of formats and we will be learning about academic honesty and how to correctly cite our sources.
Reading Focus – Summarising and Synthesising
The next Reading Comprehension strategies that we will be focussing on are Summarising and Synthesising so we would love for you to help your child with these ones over this new UOI.
Summarising……Summarising teaches students how to discern the most important ideas in a text, how to ignore irrelevant information, and how to integrate the central ideas in a meaningful way. Teaching students to summarise improves their memory for what is read. Summarisation strategies can be used in almost every content area.
Why Use Summarising?
- It helps students learn to determine essential ideas and consolidate important details that support them.
- It enables students to focus on keywords and phrases of an assigned text that are worth noting and remembering.
- It teaches students how to take a large selection of text and reduce it to the main points for more concise understanding.
Synthesising.……..Synthesising is the development of what we’re reading…as we read it! As we read, an original thought takes shape, and then it expands or changes as we read new information. Essentially it is “Combining new ideas with what I already read to get something new and different.” As students read, their thinking should change depending on new information.

- 5D Writing – Using your plans, write your third paragraph for your story. This paragraph should resolve the problem from the second paragraph, but shouldn’t end up being the end of the story with phrases like “and then they all went home and lived happily ever after”. You have your first and second paragraphs typed up on your google accounts to re-read what you have already written. Please write the third paragraph on paper so that I can see your editing and mark your work. We will type them up when we return to school. If you wish to continue after the third, be my guest!
- Mathletics – continue with the set tasks or feel free to try any others that you feel you want to practice.
- Spelling – The children are sent home their 10 personal words that they need to learn for the week. The will happen on a Monday for 5F, Wednesday for 5D and Friday for 5C. Please, can a parent (or responsible adult) support the children by...testing them (written or oral), getting them to put their words into interesting sentences (written or oral), discussing the meanings of the words, thinking about synonyms and antonyms of that word, discussing words with a similar meaning etc.
- Reading – The children will be choosing levelled readers based on their own ability and are expected to read each night for at least 20mins at home with a parent. The children need to record their reading in their Reading Journals and parents can you please sign your child’s journal each night? Journals need to be returned to school each morning to be checked and will come home each evening (except Friday). Children may use Big Universe twice a week (only) as their choice of home reading
- Mandarin Home Learning – All children are encouraged to take a reading book home on the days when they have Mandarin lessons.
