Start of School Arrangements
Please note that students should not arrive at school before 8.30am. Teachers are on duty from 8.30am. Any child who arrives early cannot be supervised.
Healthy Living at BHS
We promote healthy living at BHS and therefore children should only bring water to school. Please do not send milk drinks, sugary drinks or any other kind of drink. We have water fountains and taps where students can refill their (BHS) water bottles throughout the day.
The Year 6 students set the example to other children in the school and bringing in large bags of M and Ms or McDonald’s for snack and lunch is simply unacceptable. We appreciate your support as always.

Deodorant
As the children are growing and changing their bodies will begin to sweat, especially in these hot summer months. Please provide your children with deodorant and remind them to keep clean and hygienic.

We have started the second part of the term in full swing and have been very busy this week. Our second UOI is all about Conflict and we started by unpacking the central idea to show our understanding of the vocabulary. The children came up with their own versions of the central idea as well to help them understand further. Adding images and pictures helped us to express and visualise what conflict might look like. It is important that the children have a say in their learning, so they were given the opportunity to share what they would like to learn about during this unit as well as offering suggestions as to how they would like to learn. You have plenty of creative ideas and we look forward to where this may lead regarding your personal inquiry.

As we begin to think about our new comprehension strategy in reading we are developing our knowledge about Inference. We have discussed ways in which we can make meaning of images and text to demonstrate a better understanding using clues. This will be ongoing throughout the unit, it should help us with our new text type too.

We also used one of the world record holder’s techniques to draw the perfect circle. Here’s how they turned out…

Year 6 Action Board – Global Goals

In September 2015, 193 world leaders agreed to 17 Global Goals for Sustainable Development. If these Goals are completed, it would mean an end to extreme poverty, inequality and climate change by 2030.

Our governments have a plan to save our planet…it’s our job to make sure they stick to it.

The Global Goals are only going to work if we fight for them and you can’t fight for your rights if you don’t know what they are. We believe the Goals are only going to be completed if we can make them famous.

In Year 6 we are keeping track of all the amazing Action happening at school and at home.

Transdisciplinary Theme : Sharing the Planet

Central Idea- Reaching a resolution during periods of conflict is influenced by the actions and reactions of all involved.

Lines of Inquiry  – We will inquire into…

  1. Causes of conflict (causation, perspective)
  2. Conflict resolution and management (responsibility)
  3. Our responsibility as a member of a community. (Responsibility)

The children will be thinking about different types of conflict which they may have encountered or read about. In class we will be working together to identify different strategies to help resolve different conflict whether it is at home, in school or thinking about the wider world on a global scale.

Number Maths – Year 6 will continue to investigate and share a variety of strategies when adding and subtracting decimal numbers.

Central Idea – We use the same rules for the computation of decimal fractions as for whole numbers

Strand Maths – Year 6 are exploring and learning how to measure the properties of circles.

Central Idea – We use the same rules for the computation of decimal fractions as for whole numbers

We will continue to draw inferences when we read by looking at a variety of passages from texts. Year 6 will be focusing on the story ‘Half A Man’ by Michael Morpurgo using the illustrations and descriptions to apply their learning of inference.

I think…(your inference) because…(evidence from the text)

Spelling : The children should be tested on their words at home 3 times per week ready for our buddy test on Friday.  Any words that the children spell incorrectly during the buddy test on Friday will get carried over to next week’s ‘Words I need to learn…’  All children need to remember to bring in their Spelling Journals each day.

Reading : Each child should be reading throughout the week. Don’t forget to think about your weekly reflection for your Reading Journals!
