This week in year 6 we were lucky to get another visit from Mr Melsom. Some Year 6 students were fortunate to be involved in setting up the watering system that is going to help our garden grow some fresh herbs and beautiful plants. Once the weather warms up it will be interesting to see what wildlife the new additions attract.
Mr Judge also paid us a visit. He has helped our minds tune in to various issues surrounding working conditions for adults and children in factories all over the world. Over the coming weeks we will be learning lots about human rights, allowing us to tune in and and prepare for the up coming Year 6 PYP Exhibition.
Lots of children from Year 6 have taken part in a touch rugby tournament at King’s Park. We entered three teams and all of the children played extremely well. It was a learning curve for a lot of the children as they had only been to a limited number of training sessions. In spite of the lack of training, each of the boys teams won a game and the girls team’s defence was only broken twice in four matches, meaning that they finished second in their group and only losing one game.  A big thank you to Mr Hoskins and Mr Teahan for working so hard coaching the teams!

Year 6 Unit of Inquiry 4

Transdisciplinary Theme : Who we are

Central Idea : We face many changes as we go through life

Lines of Inquiry  – We will inquire into…

  • the nature of self
  • beliefs and values
  • personal, physical, mental and spiritual health
  • human relationships including friends, families, communities and cultures
  • rights and responsibilities
  • what it means to be human

Concepts : form, change, causation

Learner Profile : balanced, refelective

Attitudes : Confidence, empathy, respect

As this is a short week with Sports Day, a rugby tournament and visits from Mr Judge and Mr Melsom we have just been tuning in to our new unit. Some classes have discussed what changes have happened to them in their lives and also what changes they expect to happen in the coming years.

Central IdeaPatterns can be represented, analysed and generalized using algebraic expressions, equations or functions.

We were excited to start a new unit in number maths : Pattern and Function. This unit will look at how patterns occur mathematically and how these patterns can be found in the real world, like Fibonacci’s interesting theory. Our number classes completed pre-assessments so we can tailor the curriculum to the needs of our students.

Strand Maths – Data Handling

Central IdeaRange, mode, median and mean can be used to analyse statistical data. THEN Probability can be represented on a scale between 0-100% and can be predicted theoretically

Some classes have completed pre-assessments in as well as completing work from the previous unit.

Our new Unit of Inquiry in English is autobiographies. In this unit the children will get to focus on their first person writing skills and ultimately produce their very own autobiographies. This week we have introduced the new success criteria and have talked about the ways in which we can learn about what makes a successful autobiography. In the coming weeks we will be excited to learn about the lives of other people and to use various pieces of writing to enable us to produce our own writing.

We have been using our English skills in various forms this week. Drama activities, note taking and discussions have been used to help kick start our new inquiries, it is a very exciting time in Year 6.

As always, buddy spelling tests are held every Friday so Spelling Journals are an absolute necessity for Fridays.  Spelling Journals need to be back in to school everyday to enable students to work on the spelling investigations in the back of the journal throughout the week and also to add personal spelling words to as they arise during the weekdays.

UOI : As our new unit is all about changes we would like the children to interview a family member of their choice in order to find out how lives are impacted by change. The children can record this work on paper or using a Google Doc or Google Drawing. They can take notes and/or prepare a graphic organiser to show what they have learnt. We will be using this info for a follow up homework task next week…so please make sure you take the time to get this one done this week.

Can all the children continue to learn the words to Brave and Hall of Fame? If any children are playing instruments please keep up the rehearsing at home.

Spelling : Spelling Journal homework – 3 practice spelling tests to be conducted under the supervision of an adult at home, daily spelling practice and any additional journal tasks set by the class teacher.

Reading : Weekly reflections to be completed at least once a week. Children need to ensure they are reading at home each night for at least 20 mins and to write one weekly reflection about their reading in their diaries. Parents are not required to write a comment or to sign the book. However, continued interest and involvement in your child’s reading would be appreciated and will assist in their development.

Number Maths :

  • Miss Fearn – Mathletics
  • Miss Fisher
  • Mr Hoskins – Please find some real life examples of Fibonacci. Use this link for ideas if you are struggling to remember what we discussed in class click here —–> Fibonacci’s theory
  • Mrs Davis – Please try to finish the percentage/ fractions and decimal related tasks on Mathletics this week

Thought of the Week :  Mistakes are proof that you are trying #growthmindset
