Deodorant – although the weather is slowly cooling down please we still offer a gentle reminder about each child wearing and re-applying deodorant at school. The classrooms get very smelly after the children being out in the playground during breaks and PE times.
On Monday we started our lunch time Playground Conflict Monitors. We trained the children up on how to solve conflicts in the playground during our first UOI so they were raring and ready to go! Each child will be given the chance to work for a week with both the upper school (Year4-6) and the lower school (Year1-3) during their lunch play time throughout the next couple of months. After this initial period we will be asking for volunteers to continue to work in teams to help out at lunch times. It’s a great chance for the children to actively take some action. The groups that were on this week did a really good job! Well done.
This week we also had our school photo days. Whole school and class photographs were taken as were individual photos and sibling photos today. Order forms and more information will come home shortly.

Central Idea : The operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division are related to each other and can be modelled in different ways.
Our Operations UOI continued this week – in Number Maths and on Wednesday it was World Maths Day and all the children enjoyed playing their World Maths Day games on the Mathletics website. Thanks to all the children who remembered to bring in their $10 (or more!) to support UNICEF.
Strand Maths – Data Handling
Central Idea : Data can be presented effectively for valid interpretation and communication.
This week we continued on with our Data Handling UOI and 6F was busy using frequency tables to collect data on their investigation into boys and girls reaction times. All classes have been working on an assortment of data tasks and investigations and will continue to do so for the next few weeks.
Historical Fiction is our focus genre for this UOI and we have been looking into good examples of these types of texts and deconstructing and annotating them. We have discussed what makes a good Historical Fiction story and we thought how we can use our trip to the Hong Kong History Museum to inspire our writing. Over the holidays if you’re looking for something to do take the kids out to one of Hong Kong’s many museums or do a tour of some old Hong Kong streets and buildings. We will be discussing Hong Kong ‘then and now’ throughout this unit.
As always, buddy spelling tests are up and running and will are held every Friday so Spelling Journals are an absolute necessity for Fridays. Spelling Journals need to be back in to school everyday to enable students to work on the spelling investigations in the back of the journal throughout the week and also to add personal spelling words to as they arise during the weekdays.
Spelling : Spelling Journal homework – 3 practice spelling tests to be conducted under the supervision of an adult at home, daily spelling practice and any additional journal tasks set by the class teacher.
Reading : Weekly reflections to be completed at least once a week. Children need to ensure they are reading at home each night for at least 20 mins and to write one weekly reflection about their reading in their diaries. Parents are not required to write a comment or to sign the book. However, continued interest and involvement in your child’s reading would be appreciated and will assist in their development.

UOI : Ancient Civilisations – can all children please make sure they have added to their classes Google Doc from last week’s homework, were are still missing a full 3 entries from some children.
This week the children will be choosing a 101st Object! An important object that they would add to the list and they need to justify their choice. What to do and how to go about this has been explained to all the classes but you may like to check in with them and see how they are going with this. This piece of work is due back to school the first Friday after half term….Friday 30th October, 2015.
